UAGC Faculty of the Month Dr. Cheri Ketchum believes education can change the way people see the world.

As Lead Faculty in the Department of Communication and Humanities at the University of Arizona Global Campus, Dr. Ketchum teaches persuasion, intercultural communication, and conflict while encouraging students to examine what they believe and why they believe it. Through research, skepticism, and thoughtful argument, she helps students become more informed communicators who can use persuasion responsibly.

“I want to create more thoughtful, informed human beings who can operate in this world in a way that both allows them to achieve their personal goals and also be aware of the social implications of what they're doing.”

Sometimes a dream gets delayed, but that doesn’t mean it has to be left behind.

Years after putting her master’s degree on hold, Stephanie Paul took a leap of faith and returned to school with support from her employer's tuition assistance program.

Balancing a full-time job and school wasn’t easy, but the flexibility of her program and support from UAGC staff and instructors helped her keep moving forward.

Now, Stephanie is a proud 2026 graduate with her master’s degree and a reminder worth sharing: “It’s never too late to achieve your dreams."

UAGC Student of the Month Alexis Barbella’s story is one of resilience, reinvention, and finding purpose through education.

After navigating addiction, toxic relationships, and years of uncertainty, Alexis rebuilt her life and returned to higher education 17 years after graduating from high school. She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from UAGC and is now pursuing a master’s degree in organizational management with aspirations of becoming a leader and mentor.

Today, Alexis applies what she learned through her psychology degree in her work as a UAGC admission specialist, supporting prospective students who may be uncertain about their ability to pursue a degree.

“My past might have shaped me, but it does not define me. What defines me is how I chose to grow from it and use it to help others.”

“Education is truly the gift that gives forever.”

After earning her MBA from UAGC in 2019, Brittny Ferguson wanted her U.S. Bank colleagues to have access to the same kind of opportunity. Her goal was realized when she helped bring a partnership between UAGC and U.S. Bank to life. Now, U.S. Bank employees and their families can take advantage of an education benefit to pursue their degrees, too!

Inspired by Brittny’s story, that’s exactly what Amanda Iglesias did. And then things came full circle. When Amanda graduated this past spring with her Bachelor of Arts in Business Leadership, Brittny was there to deliver the Commencement address. It was a moment we’ll never forget!

Their story is a reminder of what’s possible when someone opens a door and encourages others to walk through it. Watch Amanda and Brittny share their story and discover how U.S. Bank employees are investing in their futures through education.

"My educational journey represents another major milestone in my transition from 10 years of service in the U.S. Air Force to a career in Information Technology and Software Quality Assurance.

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Information Technology from the University of Arizona Global Campus, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a 3.92 cumulative GPA and 3.98 major GPA. During my time at UAGC, I was honored to be named to the Dean’s List for Fall 2025 and Spring 2026, inducted into Alpha Sigma Lambda and the SALUTE Veterans National Honor Society, and participate in the CHAMPS Peer Mentor program. I was also honored to be nominated for UAGC Student/Alum of the Month, which was meaningful recognition of the progress I have made academically, professionally, and personally.

I completed my degree while working full time as a Software Quality Assurance Tester supporting mission-critical Department of Defense systems. Balancing my career, education, and family required discipline and persistence, but my experiences in the Air Force taught me the importance of continuing to grow and taking advantage of every opportunity to improve myself.

I am proud of what I accomplished at UAGC and look forward to continuing to build my career in information technology and software quality assurance. I also have a feeling this will not be the end of my educational journey."

"In February of this year, I completed my bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona Global Campus.

Having my diploma in my hands has given me the opportunity to reflect on what this accomplishment truly represents. This diploma represents so much more than a degree. I earned it while working full time, raising three children, moving across the country twice, navigating family emergencies, and continuing to show up when life didn’t exactly make it easy.

Yes, I learned the material required for my degree, but some of the most valuable lessons happened outside of the classroom. I learned time management because there were never enough hours in the day. I learned how to prioritize and multitask because work, school, and motherhood didn’t take turns needing me. I learned discipline because motivation comes and goes, but commitments remain, and I learned perseverance because sometimes success simply means refusing to quit.

There is a different kind of pride that comes from knowing how hard you had to fight for something. When I look at this diploma, I see the late nights, sacrifices, challenges, and moments I questioned whether I could keep doing it. I see the grit it took to keep going anyway. I’m incredibly proud of earning this degree, but I’m even more proud of who I became along the way.

My biggest takeaway? You don’t have to have perfect circumstances to accomplish something you’re proud of. Sometimes you just have to keep showing up."

Labor Day offers an opportunity to celebrate the dedication and perseverance of America’s workers, whose contributions continue to move our nation forward.

Our offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7, 2026, in observance of the holiday. The deadline for all learning activities for students has been extended from Monday, Sept. 7, to Tuesday, Sept. 8. Students are encouraged to submit their assignments as early as possible and to remember that the attendance policy as published in the University of Arizona Global Campus Academic Catalog (https://bit.ly/4dkcTjM) is still in effect.
