Join us for the next talk in the GRAIN Speaker Series featuring 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗚𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗼𝗻, who will present “𝗣𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗘𝗻𝗱-𝗧𝗼-𝗘𝗻𝗱”.

Mitchell L. Gordon is an Assistant Professor at MIT EECS/CSAIL and a Member of Technical Staff at OpenAI. His research designs interactive systems, models, and evaluations for AI alignment and safety.

In this talk, he will discuss challenges that arise at several different parts of an end-to-end collective alignment process, from theory and definitions, to gathering and acting on people’s input, to applying behavioral guidance in agentic systems.

Africa has the world's highest share of people working in agriculture and the largest reserves of arable land, yet its food security is increasingly strained by weather volatility and climate change. How can AI help build a more sustainable future?

Join us for the next talk in the GRAIN Speaker Series by 𝗗𝗿. 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝗹 𝗔𝗺𝗮𝘆𝗼. He will talk about "𝗔𝗜 & 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁."

Paul is a lecturer and researcher in Electrical Engineering at the University of Cape Town. His research focuses on computer vision, robotics, and AI for agriculture. In this talk, he will discuss how robots, AI models, and intelligent agents can support African agriculture while enabling richer monitoring of the natural environment.

Our next speaker for the Global Responsible AI Network (GRAIN) Series is 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗵 from the University of Washington! She will give a talk about “𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁.”

Melanie is an Assistant Professor in the Information School and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the English Department at the University of Washington. Her research examines how data and computational methods shape contemporary culture — such as social media, publishing, and libraries — and how they can be used to understand culture in turn. Her work spans data science, digital humanities, cultural analytics, literature, media studies, and library and information science.

🌍 Join us for the first talk in the Global Responsible AI Network (GRAIN) Summer Seminar Series!

GRAIN brings together global perspectives on responsible AI research and practice, creating space for conversations around AI ethics, governance, privacy, safety, justice, and the societal impacts of AI technologies.
​
Our first speaker is 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗼𝘀 (𝗠𝗜𝗧 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗟𝗮𝗯), who will share insights on 𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. She is widely recognized for co-developing the concept of algorithmic audits, a now-standard framework for diagnosing bias and discrimination in opaque digital systems. Her research draws on computer science, sociology, law, psychology, and design to inform the development of more transparent and accountable systems.

Prof. Sharifa Sultana (from CS, UIUC) and Ishtiaque Ahmed (from UofToronto) had a fantastic discussion on Responsible AI, the current Bangladeshi information ecosystem, and AI's potential influence on society, human development, and politics, as part of the Sokaler Bangladesh Program on Jamuna TV Bangladesh.

The discussion was brief, but it touched on numerous concerns related to AI and society, both within and beyond borders.

জানুয়ারির ৫ তারিখে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে আমি (Dr. Sharifa Sultana, Assistant Prof., Computer Science, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) এবং Dr. Ishtiaque Ahmed (Associate Prof., Computer Science, University of Toronto) কথা বলব বাংলাদেশের সাপেক্ষে Artificial Intelligence এর চ্যালেঞ্জ এবং ঝুঁকির বিষয়গুলো নিয়ে। এই প্রেক্ষিতে কীভাবে ঝুঁকি কমিয়ে বাংলাদেশের জন্য দীর্ঘমেয়াদি একটি Responsible AI এর ডিজাইন এবং পলিসি ফ্রেমওয়ার্ক দাঁড় করানো যায় সেটা আলোচনায় আসবে।

এই অনুষ্ঠানে আমাদের বক্তব্য ছাড়াও একটি প্যানেল ডিসকাশন হবে। সেখানে অংশগ্রহণ করবেন বাংলাদেশের AI রিলেটেড তিনটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ফিল্ডের তিনজন অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মানুষ।

- একাডেমিয়ার দিক থেকে আসবেন ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের Institute of Information Technology এর ডিরেক্টর প্রফেসর B M Mainul Hossain । উনি বাংলাদেশ AI অলিম্পিয়াড এরও দেখভালের দায়িত্বে রয়েছেন।

- পলিসি এবং ডেভেলপমেন্ট সেক্টর থেকে অংশ নেবেন UNESCO এর Expert Without Borders, ডঃ Zulkarin Jahangir । উনি UNESCO এর সাথে কিছুদিন আগে বাংলাদেশের AI Readiness Assessment Map স্টাডিটা সম্পন্ন করেছেন যেখান থেকে বাংলাদেশে বর্তমানে AI প্রকল্প বাস্তবায়নের সুযোগ ও প্রতিকূলতা উঠে এসেছে।

- ইন্ডাস্ট্রি সেক্টর থেকে আমাদের সাথে যোগ দিচ্ছেন বাংলাদেশের অত্যন্ত সফল একটি AI কোম্পানি, Augmedix Bangladesh এর কান্ট্রি ডিরেক্টর জনাব Rashed Mujib Noman।

আমাদের একটা প্রজেক্টে আমরা দেখছি বাংলাদেশের টেক এবং ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং ফিল্ডের প্রফেশনাল মানুষজন কি কি কাজে LLM and other types of AI ব্যবহার করছে, করতে গিয়ে কি কি ঝামেলা হচ্ছে, কিভাবে সমাধান হচ্ছে ইত্যাদি।
এজন্য ইন্টার্ভিউ করার জন্য আমরা কিছু মানুষ খুঁজছি।
