AALSA members had a great time making dumplings for Lunar New Year!
We thought it was important to address a recent incident that impacts our University of Illinois campus. A shuttle bus company that services many U of I students, has recently come under fire for making negative remarks against international students in its promotional email and a subsequent "apology" email. While multiple statements in both emails are problematic, we want to particularly focus on one. The apology email states that a “high percentage of nonnative [E]nglish speakers places a variety of burdens on domestic students.” We disagree. Our campus, including the College of Law, is home to all groups of people and we would like to reiterate the importance of an inclusive atmosphere for everyone to have a peaceful educational experience. Statements like the ones in the emails mentioned above divide communities and perpetuate hurtful sentiments. As we finish up this semester, we hope to continue our efforts to celebrate diversity and inclusivity at our school. Thanks, and good luck to students that are studying for finals!

"After the war, he joined his family in Ohio for five years and returned to the Los Angeles area in 1951. He started a family, rebuilt engines for the Department of Water and Power and retired at 72.
With characteristic Nisei reticence, he paused when asked what he wanted America to learn on the 75th anniversary of Executive Order 9066.
'That’s tough,' he said, resting his cheek in his hand.
'I’m just glad I went into the service and served my country.'" http://www.latimes.com/local/education/la-me-japanese-executive-order-20170219-story.html
A chilling moment to mark the 75th anniversary of the executive order that led to Japanese American internment He’s 94 years old and still clearly remembers.
