Writing present levels? Here's what strong data collection actually looks like.

Present levels are the foundation of the entire I.D.E.A. Every goal, service, and accommodation should trace back to this section.

Before you write, pull data from as many sources as you can.

Student strengths and areas of growth.

Gen ed teacher input.

Related service provider input, like speech or OT.

Behavior data, if a behaviorist is involved.

Classroom data and your own progress monitoring data.

Statewide and district wide assessment data.

ELPA data, if your student is an English language learner.

The more sources you have, the stronger and more defensible your present levels will be.
