“Mom! It was the same lady as last year!” My daughter’s excitement was contagious, but I still didn’t have a clue what she was talking about.

Once she was out of the auction ring, my daughter explained that the woman who bought her lamb was the same woman who she met last year at the Cayuga County 4H Auction. That woman was Kelly Landsdown Brown.

Kelly works for Cayuga Lake National Bank and she has supported young 4H Entrepreneurs at the Livestock Market Auction for two years in a row.

As it turns out, my daughter wasn’t just excited that she sold her “homegrown lamb” - she was delighted that someone believed in her enough to bid on her animal for two consecutive years. She was excited that Kelly noticed her grit and love of her animals. She was proud to answer questions that Kelly asked and invited her to the farm for a visit.

For my part, I am filled with appreciation and gratitude.

As a new farmer, I appreciate that folks like Kelly prioritize small farms and programs like 4H that help teach entrepreneurial skills to our county’s children.

And as a mom, I’m grateful that Kelly supported my daughter’s dreams of growing her flock and her business. But, I’m mostly grateful for the way that one gesture can reinforce the growth and depth of care & character that we work to foster in our home.

So, thank you, Kelly! And we hope you take us up on a farm visit!

Looking to stock your freezer with locally raised, pastured lamb? We’ve got that for you!

Young 4H Farmers will be auctioning off their Market Animals on Friday, July 31st starting at 5pm at the Union Springs Fire Department. Buyers should show up early to register to bid and plan to take home delicious, locally raised meats for their family.

Along the way, you’ll be supporting young farmers on their entrepreneurial endeavors.

And whoever purchases the lamb grown on our farm will also take with them a little extra luck with their good karma! (Yes, that’s a real 4 leaf clover that was found in our pastures).
