I’ve been saving this sensory tray all summer, and there’s a pretty funny reason it never made it to toddler time…

Let’s rewind to the day I was supposed to set this up…
I had spent the week getting everything ready for a two-day vendor event, packed all the materials for this tray into a bag, and left it in the kitchen ready to go.

The bag was heavy — mostly because it had a FIVE-POUND bag of rocks in it. Like any wide, I asked my husband to grab it on the way out. We drove 30 minutes to the farm, and when we got there I asked, “Did you grab the bag?”

Like any husband his response was: “Uh… what bag?”

Sooo… no duck pond that day.

We still had a wonderful time at toddler time, but this little tray never got its chance. So, before summer reaches its end, I finally set it up at home — and all three of my little ones got to enjoy it.

Definitely better late than never. 🤍🦆

A little package headed from our little corner of North Carolina all the way to Pennsylvania. 📦🍋

One of my favorite parts of running Silly Little Lemons from home is getting to see these little packages make their way into homes far beyond our own.

This particular order was packed up and dropped off with my littlest helper in tow. Behind every package is a lot of mixing, making, packing, planning… and usually a toddler or baby somewhere in the middle of it all.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the shelf sale, whether you grabbed something for your own little ones, picked up a gift, shared a post, or simply cheered me on. It truly means so much to me to see these little pieces of sensory play making their way into new homes.

The closing shift after a full day of play. 🤍

By the end of the day, the playroom is usually a disaster. Books are scattered everywhere, toys have somehow made their way into every room, and whatever sensory tray we got into that day is still sitting on the table.

So after everyone is in bed, I try to take a little time to put things back together. Not because I need everything to be perfectly clean, but because my nervous system functions better and I really do love having a home that is made for living in. A place where we can pull everything off the shelves, make a mess, read all the books, create things, and then come back the next morning and start again.

And once the house is quiet, I make some tea and give myself a little time to unwind, too.

Just a normal evening around here.

A little messy. A little slow. And full of the things I want our days to hold.

I want them to remember childhood like this…

Fresh air. Open spaces. Time to wander and wonder.

I want them to remember having the freedom to follow a question, stop and notice something small, get a little messy, and be completely fascinated by the world around them.

I want them to remember that learning wasn’t something that happened at a desk. Sometimes it happened on a walk, beside a lake, or with a handful of leaves in their pockets.

I want them to remember a childhood full of curiosity.

That we made time to slow down and appreciate the beauty God placed all around us.

Because one day, these ordinary mornings will be memories.

And I hope they remember them as full of wonder. 🍃 🐛 🪵

Apparently, I have a habit of rearranging our playroom…

Since we moved into this house last year, I’ve probably rearranged this space at least a dozen times as our family has moved through different seasons and stages.

But through all of those changes, there’s one thing I’ve always wanted to make room for: books.

Not just because reading is important, but because of everything that comes with it.

The imagination that grows when a child gets lost in a story.
The curiosity that makes them ask, “What happens next?”
The discovery of new places, people, ideas, and possibilities.
The creativity that comes from dreaming up worlds of their own.

As we get ready to begin our preschool journey, I wanted our books to have a more intentional place in our everyday life—within reach, easy to see, and woven into the rhythm of our days.

So we created a little seasonal bookshelf and reading space right in our preschool corner.

A small space, but one that I hope becomes a big part of their childhood.

Because I want our home to be a place where there is always room for a good story. 📚

There’s something so special about looking back at a summer full of little moments of play. 🍋🌿

From chickens on the farm and Peter Rabbit’s garden to counting sheep, jumping over the moon, and getting wonderfully muddy on the farm, our Toddler Time trays have given little hands so many ways to explore stories, songs, animals, nature, and imagination.

And as we get ready to step into a new season of Toddler Time, I’m feeling especially grateful for all the messy, hands-on learning we’ve shared this summer. 🤎

These trays were never just about what was *in* the bin. They were about little hands scooping, pouring, counting, pretending, discovering, and making connections through play.

We’re so excited for what’s coming next—and I have a feeling this next season is going to be just as sweet. 🍂✨

Here’s to another season of meaningful play, familiar stories, and plenty of childhood magic.

I believe kids need more of this kind of learning…

The kind where their hands get dirty. Where they scoop, squish, splash, rinse, wonder, experiment, and figure things out without being told exactly what the “right” way to play is.

There is so much learning happening in muddy hands.
Fine motor work. Sensory exploration. Imaginative play. Cause and effect. Problem solving. Language. Confidence. And the simple joy of being a child who is allowed to get a little messy.

I don’t think sensory play has to compete with outdoor play, nature, or real-world exploration.

I think children need BOTH!

Sometimes learning looks like a carefully prepared invitation to play. And sometimes it looks like a handful of taste safe mud and a bucket of water.

Both are childhood. Both are learning.
