Obviously, in hospice, we care for the dying and the dead. Over my chaplaincy career in the Los Angeles area, I believe over the course of a year, the average hospice professional loses one patient per day. Broken down into seasons, I believe the average rises to 1.25 deaths/per day over February to March and then drops to 0.75/day in April, slowly rising back to one death/day by the fall through the winter. What are your observations in your area?

Another great study highlighting the work of chaplains in palliative care. The authors created and studied a structured approach to life review with their patients. Initially, I was hesitant about the structured approach because of my training to follow the patients story; however, this study caused me to reflect further and to be more open minded about its benefits. In fact, when I assess for spiritual needs, I’m using a tool that inherently is structured. Thank you to the authors, respondent, and Transforming Chaplaincy for this webinar.

Another very interesting webinar from Chaplaincy. This one is about fatalism and self efficacy. Fatalism is the idea a person has little to ability to change their circumstances and/or future. As a CPE Supervisor, my approach to fostering growth in my students is leaning in to my Enneagram 2 Helper identity. Us 2s love to help others and our “shadow side” is the Challenger. Instead of fearing the challenger, I use it, literally, to challenge my students. Without it, we won’t be able to see blind spots in our own life and ministry.
