Love seeing students make connections across lessons!

During our review of legato pedaling this week, Ronith showed fantastic initiative by connecting our previous work on major and minor triads to the exercise. That extra curiosity led us straight into building diminished and augmented triads—and Ronith was thrilled to tackle the challenge! 👏

Big congratulations to Ronith for finishing his first sight-reading book! 🥳👏🌟Reading sheet music on the fly is a serious mental workout—you have to process multiple musical elements simultaneously. That’s why sight-reading exercises are kept simpler than the pieces students learn step-by-step with a teacher.

So proud of my student Olivia! 🌟 She just finished learning “Starfish at Night” by Canadian composer Anne Crosby Gaudet.
It’s such a wonderful piece for exploring new colors at the piano—like whole tone scale, glissando, and beautiful echo dynamics. She did a fantastic job bringing it to life.

In my studio, students begin developing a musical ear alongside learning notation right from their very first lessons. One of the ways I do this is through transposing. In this video, Rishan, who has been taking lessons for about 4 months, is being introduced to transposing for the first time. As much as it seems tricky and intimidating, it is also a lot of fun.

Please turn up your volume and enjoy Anna’s wonderful performance! She took on a major ear-training challenge for this one: learning the melody of the first two sections of “The Stars and Stripes Forever” completely by ear.

This American classic has a remarkably moving backstory. In 1896, John Philip Sousa was traveling back to the U.S. on an ocean liner, deeply saddened and homesick after learning of his band manager's passing. It was during this somber voyage that he composed the entire triumphant march in his head, not putting pen to paper until he finally reached home. Nearly a century later, in 1987, it was officially named the National March of the United States. 🇺🇸

⭐️ Student Spotlight: Meet Avanthika!

Please join me in celebrating Avanthika, who joined my studio about a year ago.

Before beginning formal lessons, Avanthika was completely self-taught. Guided by YouTube tutorials and her own excellent musical ear, she managed to teach herself several songs and pieces entirely on her own.

Since starting her structured lessons, she has been learning to read notation, understand music theory, and refine the technique.

Beyond her achievements at the piano, Avanthika is a professional golfer and she recently won a major golf tournament! I always love celebrating my students' diverse interests and successes outside of the piano studio.

Congratulations on your tournament win, Avanthika, and on a fantastic year of musical growth! 😀

Making up music on the spot is just so fun and liberating. It gives you a total sense of freedom where there are absolutely no wrong notes.

In this video, Nica is doing a great job first improvising on the 4 notes over a 12-bar blues accompaniment and then improvising on the black keys over a ballad-like accompaniment. It was her first ever attempt in improvisation and I was impressed by her rhythms and synchronization with the beat. 😀
