The University of North Carolina TEACCH® Autism Program is a University-based system of community regional centers that offer a set of core services along with unique demonstration programs meeting the clinical, training, and research needs of autistic individuals, their families, and professionals across North Carolina. TEACCH offers clinical services for individuals on the autism spectrum across the lifespan. Services are offered to residents of North Carolina and are designed to promote communication, executive function, social skills, and emotion regulation. Parent coaching is provided to help parents understand their child’s unique learning styles. TEACCH offers a variety of training (virtual and in-person) and consultation programs to professionals who work with individuals on the autism spectrum. Our training program focuses on the learning styles of autism and the use of Structured TEACCHing strategies and visual supports to provide meaning, promote independence, and capitalize on individual strengths. TEACCH conducts clinical research focused on providing evidence-based care to autistic individuals and their families in their home communities. Our research examines intervention effectiveness in clinic, school, and community settings. The administrative headquarters of the TEACCH program are in Carrboro, North Carolina, and there are seven regional TEACCH Centers around the state of North Carolina. It was wonderful to collaborate with ArcMorris, The Arc of Essex County, and Spectrum for Living for two 2-day Adult Fundamentals of Structured TEACCHing trainings in Flanders, New Jersey!

Participants created schedules, work systems, and structured materials to support independent living, social, and leisure activities. They also developed visual calming routines for the people they support and practiced using a problem-solving process to better understand and respond to unmet needs.

One participant developed an especially creative calming-routine visual designed to be worn as a medal. Because many of the people they support are proud of their Special Olympics medals, this calming-routine medal builds on something already familiar and meaningful. The person can wear the visual, refer to the steps when needed, and feel proud of using a strategy that supports emotional regulation. One of the photos shows this thoughtful and individualized idea.

We appreciated everyone’s creativity, active participation, and commitment to making activities and environments more understandable, accessible, and meaningful.

We are delighted to announce the creation of the Autism Pioneer Mesibov Legacy Fund, made possible through the remarkable generosity of Gary Mesibov’s high school classmates. The fund honors Dr. Gary Mesibov's lasting impact as a mentor, educator, and leader at the TEACCH Autism Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Autism Pioneer Mesibov Legacy Fund will launch an undergraduate summer research fellowship, providing students with valuable opportunities to work and learn at TEACCH each summer. By supporting future leaders in autism research and practice, the fellowship will help carry forward Dr. Mesibov's legacy of mentorship and dedication to the autism community. More information about the fellowship and application process will be shared soon.

TONIGHT- TEACCH School Transition to Employment and Postsecondary Education (T-STEP) Virtual Information Session - Thursday, October 1 from 7:00 - 8:00 pm

The T-STEP was developed to support the transition to employment and post-secondary education. Participation includes skill instruction, group practice, video modeling, and role-plays. Students also receive individual career, higher education, and self-advocacy counseling. This program is available statewide in North Carolina.
