A rather out of season post as I work through my backlog. I love how making these little videos has made me more aware of the natural beauty around me.

Bonus grammar questions for the overachievers:

- What case are mihi, tibi, fīliæ, and fīliō?
- What does "Fīliæ meæ placet creāre..." literally mean?

LEVEL 1 - SUMMARIZED
Dolēmus quia Chrīstiānus sumus?
Sed, sī dolēmus, erimus patientēs.
Sī erimus patiēntēs, eris bonī.
Sī erimus bonī, spem cælī habēbimus.
Hæc spēs nōn dēficiet.

LEVEL 2 - PARAPHRASED
Trībulātiō faciet nōs patientēs.
Patientiam faciet nōs virtuōsōs.
Virtūs nōbīs dabit spem.
Et hæc spēs nōn dēficiet nōbīs.

LEVEL 3 - SIMPLIFIED
Trībulātiō operātur patientiam.
Et patientia operātur probātiōnem.
Et probātiō operātur spem.
Et spēs nōn cōnfundit.

LEVEL 4 - ORIGINAL
Tribulatio patientiam operatur: patientia autem probationem, probatio vero spem, spes autem non confundit.

Hodiē decem annōs marītī sumus!
Today is our tenth anniversary.

(Who can translate that more literally?)

incrēdibile est quantō dēsīderiō tuī tenear.
"It's unbelievable how tightly I am held by desire for you."
(Pliny to Calpurnia, Letter 7.5)

cum dignā dignus fuisse ferar.
"May they say I was worth this worthy woman."
(Sulpicia 1, genders swapped)

ut liceat nōbīs tōtā perdūcere vītā
aeternum hoc sānctae foedus amīcitiae.
"May [God] let us carry through our whole life
the eternal covenant of this holy friendship."
(Catullus 109; but I think I made a better choice than he did)

Optime dictum. Latin is worth studying for its own sake. There are always more efficient ways to learn Spanish or ace the SAT—for example, by simply learning Spanish or studying for the SAT. There's no better way to get to know the past—which is your own past—than by learning the languages of the past.

(And if Latin does also have utilitarian benefits—which I think it does—the best way to get those benefits is to focus on Latin for its own sake. "This will help me in law school someday" is not going to sustain your focus over the long, long journey that is learning a language.)

When I was learning Latin as a kid, I moved between a few different schools and a few different curricula. It was really hard to end up in a new place and have a bunch of new conjugation charts to memorize...

..until I realized that you don't actually have to do that.

Did medieval kids parse nouns and conjugate verbs? Of course they did.

They also sang songs, performed plays, and listened to Aesop's fables.

Yes, they studied grammar, but in a context of daily, living, spoken and sung Latin. Grammar was just one small part of the feast of language spread before them.
