DIACRITIC LESSONS

• Diacritic is a glyph [symbol, mark, sign, point, shape, stroke, ..etc] added or attached to a letter, character, or a basic glyph.
• In relation to symbol status, a diacritic can either be a full symbol (letter) or a modifying symbol.
• Diacritic added to a letter to indicate a special pronunciation.
• In Burmese, there are the main 16 diacritics and each have its name but group name is not found.
• A diacritic symbol cannot stand without a letter but they can convert, change, or make a letter (alphabet) to a different letter or word with a different sound (pronunciation) and meaning.
• A diacritic symbol is not useful alone itself but it uses with a letter.
• Some time, a letter is needed to add more than one symbol.

Preamble
Every day, I am worrying for my daughter and my son because they cannot read and write Burmese. They are born and staying in foreign country. Moreover, the fate separated them from me since their childhood. No school for them and they have no interested in Burmese to learn themselves.

I am thinking about not only my children but also thousands of other similar Burmese children of all over the world.

And then, I consider for the foreigners, who are international friends of Burma, they also may be interested in Burmese language.

I know that this is the responsibility but a big issue. Can I do it? A program with a textbook will be needed.

For any language, “Special Program” and “Pedagogical System” is needed for any nonnative speaker. Mostly, any program has three step courses such as primary or basic known as beginner, intermediate, and advance.

The pedagogical system of this basic course for ‘Burmese as Second Language (BSL) is my own idea and it may be different from others and unique.

Program
Burma has 8 nationalities of Chin, Kachin, Shan, Kayin, Kaya, Mon, Yakhai, and Bama. Burmese is Bama language. And also, as the common language for Burma, luckily. In side Burma, there has no problem because every school teach Burmese. Now a day, many people scattered from Burma to all over the world and the problem is no school for Burmese. So, the necessity is to create the Burmese as Second Language (BSL) Program. But, according to the situation, the chance is only the video teaching technique. It is adult education and BSL is supporting program. BSL is not business and the course should be free except material.

Text book
The name is ‘Basic Course for Beginner’. The subject is “How to Teach Burmese Language to Non-native Burmese Speaker”. The beginner course is use to called ျမန္မာသင္ပုန္းၾကီးဖတ္စာ ‘Myanmar Thin-pung:-kyi: Phat Ca’. ျမန္မာ Myanmar is Burmese, သင္ပုန္းၾကီး Thin Pung Kyi: is Blackboard, and Phat Ca is Reader. Especially, this BSL Textbook is for a person, who is non-native or non-Burmese speaker known as Burmese is the second language for him or her. The pedagogical technique (Teaching Method) is different from others. The system is based on sound and the rule is unique.

Course
The basic course means the system of alphabet to word known as primmer or basic word system. The Course content with Rule lesson, Alphabet lesson (5 chapters), Diacritic lesson (9 chapters with 136 sub-heads), Ancient Teaching System (1 chapter), and Modern Teaching System (9 chapters).
