Advanced Detailing Training Classes Worldwide

Most technicians can identify a wool pad.

Far fewer can explain the difference between a twisted wool pad and an untwisted wool pad.

In this clip, David and I discuss how wool pads are actually made, why some wool pads appear different in color and texture.

A traditional twisted wool pad remains one of the most effective tools for heavy correction work. The twisted fibers create an aggressive cutting action, making them a solid choice for removing sanding marks and correcting severe defects.

Untwisted wool pads, on the other hand, tend to feel softer and can produce a different finish depending on the paint system and application.

The details matter. Understanding how a pad is constructed can help you better predict the results you’ll achieve on the paint.

One of the reasons I enjoy teaching alongside David is that every time we’re together, I learn something new.

Many of the buffing pads we use today have evolved significantly from their original designs.

As polishing tools changed over the years, pad manufacturers had to adapt to new movements, new technologies, and new demands from technicians.

David has spent a large part of his career working around pad development and manufacturing, giving him a unique perspective on why certain pads behave the way they do and how they were designed to work.

Lesson Two is packed with insights that can help you better understand the relationship between your tool, your pad, and the paint surface.

“Wool runs hot.” Not always.

One of the biggest misconceptions in paint correction is that wool pads automatically create excessive heat.

In reality, wool can run surprisingly cool while still delivering incredible cutting power.

The compromise is that wool often leaves a rougher finish behind, especially on softer paint systems, which means additional polishing is usually required to achieve maximum clarity.

The wool pad has been around for a long time — and there’s a reason it never disappeared.

If you spend enough time around collision shops, restoration shops, or specialty paint work, you’ll still find twisted wool pads being used daily.

While the industry continues to evolve, wool remains one of the most effective tools for heavy correction and sanding scratch removal.

In lesson two, David and I discuss the different types of pads, how they behave on different machines, and why understanding your pad choice is just as important as understanding the machine itself.

The machine matters. The liquid matters. But the pad changes everything.

05/27/2026

The pad is the interface between the tool and the paint — and what happens at that interface determines the result.

Change the pad, change the movement, change the outcome.

A wool pad on a rotary will behave differently than that same pad on a dual-action. Swap that wool pad for foam, and the finish changes again.

Paint correction is all about understanding how the tool, pad, and abrasive work together — not just chasing products.

That’s where real correction happens.

One of the biggest misunderstandings in wet sanding and paint correction is knowing where the starting line — and the finish line — really is.

This weekend at Gloss University was a special one.

We spent 3 days training alongside a passionate group of technicians using my Civic — a car that represents where my journey in the automotive industry first began.

Long days, hands-on learning, and a lot of growth.
Hope everyone leaves feeling more confident, inspired, and excited to apply these skills back at their own shops.

Thank you to everyone who traveled in for the weekend👊

Another weekend training in the books.

This was our first-ever 3-day group class since starting Gloss University, and it meant a lot to all of us. Thank you to our students and instructors who traveled from near and far to be part of this weekend.

We covered a lot of advanced sanding and paint correction techniques, but more importantly, we built new friendships, shared experiences, and created memories that will stay with us for years to come.

Thank you everyone for the support, trust, and passion. We truly appreciate it.

Finally day of group training.

Now we get to see how well the team does making sure the sanding scratches are removed.

Let’s keep the pace fellas 💪

This group came to work and it showed.

Three days of Advanced Wet Sanding & Paint Correction and they are already making serious moves on this Civic.

Rotary work kicks off this afternoon. Stay tuned. 🔥

Strong start to this three-day training here at Gloss University.

Great group of students — high energy, working as a team, and making some serious progress on the sanding of the Civic today.

Tomorrow we wrap up sanding by midday and shift our focus to machine work — starting the process of working out those sanding scratches and bringing this paint back to life.

Stay tuned. It only gets better from here. 🔥
