πŸ’™ A Reflection for Our Special Education Community πŸ’™

Many families in the disability community have found comfort, understanding, and hope in β€œWelcome to Holland” by Emily Perl Kingsley. This timeless piece uses the metaphor of an unexpected journey to describe the experience of raising and supporting a child with a disability.

While every family’s story is unique, the message reminds us that it is okay to acknowledge challenges, celebrate successes, grieve expectations that may have changed, and embrace the beauty found along the way.

Our Special Education Advocacy PTA of SJUDD, believes in creating a community where families feel seen, supported, and connected. Whether you are a parent, caregiver, educator, student, or advocate, you belong here.

We invite you to take a few moments to read this powerful reflection and share your thoughts. Has β€œWelcome to Holland” resonated with your journey or supported someone you know?

πŸ’™ Together, we build understanding, acceptance, and belonging for all.

Our Special Education Advocacy PTA of SJUSD President Ryan Digman met today with the Jennifer Souza who also just started the NSEPTA in Natomas Unified School District! This movement to help ensure our kids receive the services they deserve is a local, regional, state and federal issue. We are stronger together and our voices will
be heard and will get louder and louder. We are building a community to fight for our kids civil right!

A Special Series: Ryan Digman 05/22/2026

We’re excited to share that our founding SEPTA President Ryan Digman, was previously featured on the The TED and CEC Collaboration Podcast to discuss advocacy, family voice, and the importance of listening to parents and students in special education.

This is a great listen to hear about Ryan’s thoughts on organizing and advocating in special education.

In this special episode, Ryan shares his journey as a father, advocate, former CAC Chair, and community organizer β€” highlighting the realities many families face navigating IEPs, access to services, mental health impacts, and the importance of building truly inclusive systems.

One message remains clear:
πŸ’™ Families deserve to be heard.
πŸ’™ Students deserve dignity, inclusion, and support.
πŸ’™ Advocacy creates change when communities come together and listen.

As our SEPTA continues building community across San Juan Unified School District, we remain committed to collaboration, education, support, and empowering families to advocate for their children.
