Our mission is to provide adults in Western Wayne County who have limited English language abilities in developing vital communication skills.

The Plymouth-Canton Community Literacy Council is a volunteer non-profit community organization. The Community Literacy Council provides one-on-one tutoring or small conversation groups to adults, primarily in the Plymouth-Canton area. The tutors are volunteers who are trained to tutor adults in English reading, writing and communication skills. Students and tutors meet in a public location, for approximately 1 ½ to 2 hours a week.

We’re excited to recognize Juliana Atsumi and Liz Orbits as our Tutors of the Year!

From launching our ESL Conversation Group at Belleville District Library to supporting the JumpStart program each summer, Liz consistently goes above and beyond for learners in our community. She also helped secure a Plymouth Rotary grant that strengthened our Burlington English program—creating even more opportunities for adult learners.

We’re so grateful for her leadership and commitment!

Juliana has stepped into the important role of Tutor Trainer, helping guide and support new volunteers. She also contributes her time each quarter to our CLC newsletter.

Fun fact: Juliana was once an English language learner herself—and now she’s giving back as a tutor. Her journey is a powerful reminder of what’s possible, and we’re so grateful for her leadership and heart for others!

March 2 is Read Across America Day, a day to celebrate our favorite activity. The day was established by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998 to help get kids excited about reading. The day occurs each year on the birthday of beloved children’s book author Dr. Seuss, so a perfect way to celebrate is to don a Seussian hat and read one his famous tales. On National Read Across America Day, students, teachers, parents, and community members around the nation come together to read books and celebrate the joy of reading — join us!

Wishing peace and reflection to all in our community who observe Lent. May this season bring renewal, growth, and continued commitment to learning. This Lenten season I plan to replace screen time with more reading and meditation - after the Olympics, of course. What do you plan to give up?
