A fun read, based on Mr. Funk (of Funk & Wagnell's fame..Dictionary)

---IMPUNITY--
A word that is not in Mr. Funk's book,
but one I feel I must address in this moment.
The dictionary describes this word as
+"exemption or immunity from punishment or harm"
: He carried out his evil act with impunity.
+With no care or heed for such consequences.
What would the world be like if everyone had this attitude for life and each other? Probably much as it is today, sadly enough.
Every thought and deed reflects our level of awareness of this physical domain that we have so much influence over.

*TATTOO: "close the bars"...
In the army and navy, just before taps are sounded, a 'tattoo' on the drums is used as one type of signal to warn the boys to go to quarters.
But in Middle English times it was spelled 'taptoo', from the Dutch word 'taptoe' which meant "the tap is closed," 'tap' in the sense of a beer 'tap', and 'toe', meaning "close."
On an ancient record, is a Colonel Hutchinson's order to the garrison at Nottingham, England, in 1644: "If anyone shall bee found tiplinge or drinking in any Taverne, inne, or Alehouse after the houre or nyne of the clock at night, when 'Tap Too' beates, he shall pay 2 schilling as fid (fine)."
But 'tattoo', as it applies to skin markings, is a word that we have borrowed from the Polynesian that seems to have been introduced into our language through the writings of the English navigator, Captain Cook.

As is my way, I must include words from a source of a different kind.
This quote is from the movie,
"THE PROFESSOR AND THE MADMAN."
"To chart the life of each word we must start with a record of its birth. When it was first written down.
From there, words come down to us through the ages, twisting and turning, weaving their way.
Their meaning slipping and slithering, fishlike, adding and shedding subtleties of nuance to and from themselves.
But they have tracks..in the great expanse of the literature of the English language.
We will chase them and hunt them and ferret them out, all of them,
every single word...from all the centuries of writing...and we will do so by reading every single book."

A carpenter who lacked words to describe her materials and tools would have a hard time doing good work.
Some people say we show mercy and kindness through actions alone. Words are superfluous.
There's some truth in this.
But at some point we probably need words, to understand what we are doing, to share our experiences trying to be merciful and kind.
Politicians like to use words like "freedom" and 'democracy" in a deceptive way. But they seldom use words like kindness and mercy.

Not even deceptively.
Why?
Maybe because ruthless ruling elites know: words like kindness, mercy and love are a real threat to arbitrary, unaccountable, unjust power.
If we can speak articulately about mercy, kindness and love, we will hesitate to obey a cruel and merciless ruling class who rule for their own glory and pleasure, entirely indifferent to the suffering of the ruled.
In fact, the decadent selfish ruling class fear words like mercy and kindness so profoundly, they're afraid to use them even deceptively as part of their propaganda apparatus.

That should be a clue how important words can be.

☆WORD...IS B***Y...
Means: your share

The modern word B***Y comes from the Middle Low German word "bute" which meant a distribution or a sharing.
When "bute" entered our language it began to mean "b***y" as we understand it, something taken illegally and then shared in the fashion of the pirates (aaargh) and freeloaders of those days.
It's spelling was influenced by the English word "boot" which meant profit or advantage.
This we now use in such an expression as: "He sold him his camera and then gave him a couple of films to "boot"; that is,
something besides, or in addition to, the article bought.
But the word "boot" that applies to the covering that you wear on your foot and leg seems to have come from the Old French "bote."
And "loot" is merely corruption (?) of the Hindustani word "lut," meaning "something plundered."
