Sundog Outdoor Leadership Initiative Connecting youth with nature, peers, and community while cultivating outdoor skills through fun and adventure, since 2017.

Sundog is now accepting applications for Winter 2023 after-school programs for Middle and High Schoolers in the Knox and Waldo Counties. We are continuing to partner with amazing outfitters and offer smaller, weeklong courses, without an overnight component in order to stay flexible as we continue to navigate covid. We, at Sundog Outdoor Leadership Initiative (SOLI), celebrated our 5 year anniversary this fall with a dance party at the Sail Power and Steam Museum in Rockland. Founded in 2016 in an effort to expose local youth to a healthy, active, adventurous, and inquisitive lifestyle through the acquisition of wilderness skills and experiences, we continue to provide after school programs and have added a menu of "field-trip courses" for local schools.

“Midcoast Maine offers some of the most accessible adventure spots – in the world. Within 20 minutes, you can be hiking to a summit, kayaking on the ocean, canoeing down pristine rivers, or roping up to rock climb a few pitches. This accessibility paired with the best guides in the area provides youth with a grand opportunity” said Erin Jackson, MOLI Board Member. SOLI was designed to introduce middle school students to exciting outdoor activities and skills they can use for the rest of their lives; and now we have expanded to offer select courses to high school students as well. Participants of this program will learn how to navigate the wilderness safely while being mindful of others, their impact on the functionality of a group, and the environment.

We can't believe it's already week 4 of fall programs!

Last week, our two groups participated in their respective service learning projects, with our Fishing group heading down to Port Clyde to spend time learning about seaweed (among other things!) with 🌊 🦞 and our Paddles & Peaks group helping 🥾 🌲 with trail maintenance.

Huge thanks to Alaina at Herring Gut and and John at Merryspring for giving our groups the chance to get outside AND give back to and learn from some of the amazing organizations in our community!

Next up on the Sundog program calendar: School Break Programs! ❄️🌸🌲

While we're running back the tried and true Wintery Mix February Break, we're adding a Spring Into Adventure April Break to our repertoire this year. Both programs blend season-specific outdoor adventure activities with teamwork, new friendships, and FUN!

Week 2 is in the books! Our Fishing program spent more time on the water catching more fish 🎣 and our Paddles & Peaks program spent one day on the trails and another on the water soaking up some early fall foliage and beautiful September weather! 🛶 🥾
