Have you ever used an SMB for buoyancy?
When discussing diver self reliance we regularly mention redundant breathing supply, but some of the other redundancies get discussed less often.
If you have a major failure of your BCD (like a tear or a dump valve breaking loose), then having a secondary form of lift is essential. Drysuits do a great job of this, some divers also opt for fancy dual bladder wings. But as Ryan Roeser demonstrates in this video, with the right technique an smb can not only create lift, but can allow for neutral buoyancy in proper trim.
