In Exodus 20, God says that sabbath rest is for everyone, including “you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns.” Each of us must take seriously the implications of this commandment for ourselves. The word “holiday” comes from the older English phrase, “holy day.” The first holiday, therefore, was the day when God stopped working and “made holy” the seventh day. Scripture says we are to keep the sabbath holy in response to and in imitation of what God did on the seventh day. We keep the sabbath holy by ceasing from work and receiving God’s gift of rest. If you are not quite sure what to do on a day of rest from work, God’s example of finishing the work by resting offers pertinent guidance. Find a time when you are resting to reflect on the work you have done recently. Take a delight in its goodness. Recognize ways in which your work is also part of a fallen world. According to Genesis 2:1–3, on the seventh day of creation, God rested. Genesis doesn’t tell us exactly why God rested. But the fact that God also blessed and hallowed the seventh day strongly suggests that God rested for our benefit. God wanted us to know just how important rest is for our lives. God’s action on the seventh day, or better yet, God’s decision to cease acting, is foundational for our understanding and practice of rest. If God rested, then surely those of us created in God’s image had better take rest seriously. God's example tells us rest is important. Moreover, God's blessing of the day of rest underscores its value. Rest is good. Rest is built into the very nature of the created order. We may not yet know why. The New Testament offers us freedom when it comes to things like the foods we eat or the days set apart for rest. Yet this freedom is not freedom from rest . . . regular, intentional, delightful, restorative, worshipful rest. God created us as beings who need rest. God’s directives in Scripture call us to rest. The first disciples of Jesus, those who spent hundreds of hours with him in the flesh, hearing his teachings, watching his miracles, hanging out around the campfire, and walking with him along the road, could not begin to comprehend who Jesus truly was. He was so much more than they realized. Though you and I have the benefit of centuries of reflection on the nature of Jesus Christ, and though we have creeds that identify him as fully God and fully human, the fact is that Jesus continues to exceed our comprehension and our expectations. Jesus is still so much more than we realize. Thus, we can grow in our understanding of him and our relationship with him throughout our lifetimes, and on into the age to come. Even as Jesus once had compassion for the crowds, so he has compassion for you and me today. He sees our need for a faithful, wise leader, and offers himself as our Good Shepherd. He will nourish us with himself, the Bread of Life, and through his written Word. Moreover, we who follow Jesus have the opportunity to become co-shepherds as we extend arms of love to others, as we feed the hungry and proclaim God’s truth to the world. I'm not suggesting that Jesus took his disciples on a vacation, though his example does support the idea that we all need times of rest and retreat, especially when the busyness of life threatens to overwhelm us. In fact, sometimes we need a retreat most desperately in precisely the times when we are the busiest. So, let me encourage you to look seriously and prayerfully at your calendar, and set aside time for retreat. Read more: https://buff.ly/sHPHPAE
