We are excited to celebrate and share the launch of MISTI Egypt after years of work and dedication.

This summer, for the first time since the MISTI program’s launch in 1994, fifteen undergraduate students were sent to Egypt for internships at Cairo-based institutes including, , ,

Thanks to the entire MISTI team especially Maye Elqasem for her dedication in bringing MISTI Egypt to life, to our former president, Tarek Rakha (now a professor at Georgia Tech), and his team at the time for establishing the Egypt Seed Fund for MISTI Egypt over a decade ago, and to everyone who helped facilitate connections and made this milestone possible!

We are excited to see Egypt becoming more engaged with MIT’s broader international ecosystem.

Congratulations to our very own PhD students, Seleem and Islam, on getting recognized at MIT’s Student Awards Convocation earlier this month!

1. Seleem Badawy (PhD, Harvard-MIT HST) won the Outstanding New Leader award for his leadership efforts with his department, ESA, and MSA 👏

2. Islam Genena (PhD, MIT Civil & Environmental Engineering) received a Compton community award as part of MIT Farm 👏

Congratulations to our current President, Menna Hussein, on getting nominated for and selected as the Torch Bearers in Aerospace* Runner-Up by New England section during their annual ceremony at Draper Lab last April.

Also congrats on winning the 2026 Caltech Space Challenge* last March as part of Team Voyager 🚀

*The Torch Bearers in Aerospace award recognizes two graduate students in New England for their contributions to advancing aerospace and the aerospace community, with the runner-up serving as a second place.

*The Caltech Space Challenge is a 5-Day International Space Mission Design Competition.

We are excited to share that Dr. Mohamed Abdelhafez has joined the University of Chicago as an Associate Instructional Professor of Physics, beginning July 2025.
Dr. Abdelhafez brings years of exceptional teaching and leadership experience in physics. Since 2019, he has served as a Physics Lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he led and coordinated the large-enrollment introductory physics courses 8.01 (Mechanics) and 8.02 (Electricity and Magnetism), serving hundreds of students each semester. He is the recipient of four MIT teaching awards; MIT School of Science Teaching Prize for Lecturers (2020), MIT Infinite Mile Award for Diversity and Inclusion (2021), MIT Physics Department Buechner Faculty Teaching Prize (2021), and Irwin Sizer Award for the Most Significant Improvement to MIT Education (2022).

Dr. Abdelhafez earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Chicago, where he specialized in quantum computing. He also holds a Master degree of Science in Theoretical Physics from the University of Cambridge, and a B.Sc. in Physics from the American University in Cairo.

At the University of Chicago, Dr. Abdelhafez will continue to bring his passion for engaging, student-centered teaching and his belief in the transformative power of education to the next generation of physicists. This appointment is not only a professional milestone but also a meaningful return to the institution where his academic journey as a Physics researcher began.

Dr. Abdelhafez will be deeply missed at MIT, where he has left a lasting impact on students and colleagues alike, but we are excited to see him take this next step and continue inspiring future scientists and educators.
