The world lost a brilliant soul today. It is with a heavy heart that we hear the news that Professor Maryam Mirzakhani—40, the first woman and first Iranian to receive the Fields Medal (the "Nobel Prize" of the field) in Mathematics—passed away today after battling breast cancer for nearly four years. A true inspiration to all she whom she touched, she is survived by her daughter Anahita, husband Professor Jan Vondrák, and family beyond, to whom we extend our deepest condolences in honor of her memory.
