In Washington DC, the cherry blossoms don't only signify the Spring season. They are also a symbol of diplomacy and international collaboration. The planting of cherry trees in the US capital originated in 1912 as a gift of friendship from Japan, commemorating the relationship between the two countries built by then US First Lady Helen Herron Taft and the Viscountess Chinda, who was the wife of the Japanese ambassador.

When students go on an Envoys program to Washington DC, we utilize a blend of structured and unstructured activities and discussions to delve into how the various narratives around the nation’s formation serve to alternately reinforce or disrupt our personal understanding of what it means to ‘be an American’. As we examine the institutions, systems, and procedures that comprise the American form of democracy, students consider the foundational tension between individual freedoms and societal good, analyzing how structural decisions made centuries ago impact choices today.

“Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America.” - Congressman John Lewis.

When we visit the American South with students, we learn about the civil rights movement from monuments and historical landmarks like the Edmund Pettus Bridge. We learn about Southern culture and eat delicious local dishes. We approach each place we visit and its history from a place of empathy, understanding, and respect.

When going on an Envoys program, students set their own personal goals for the trip, then reflect on whether they met them at the end.

On a recent trip to Morocco, one of our seventh graders wanted to learn about other cultures and live how others do without judging. By the end, they claim to have become a lot more understanding of Moroccan culture and “how beautiful it is to be different.”

Another student wrote: “I wanted to ride a camel, and I did.”

We support everyone’s goals, big or small, and a common favorite part of the job for members of our team is making dreams come true. This photo comes to us from Oman, from our field educator .mcintyre
