Tomorrow, we are so excited to welcome you to our first voyage of our 2025 MLAB Island Adventure to Spectacle Island in collaboration with Boston Harbor Island (BHI).

This island, like all of the Boston Harbor Islands, holds a special place in our team’s heart.

Every year, it has welcomed us to transform its landscape into a temporary classroom for our Greater Boston colleagues and neighbors to explore not only its natural beauty but explore STEM as well.

We all need to take a quiet moment to reflect on the past, present, and the future.

It’s been phenomenal to take a moment, as we prepare for our annual MLAB Island Adventure, to reflect on our Summer thus far preparing for this exciting venture.

Our MLAB Community Garden has produced several harvests for our team and guests including remarkable soups, salads, and even organic mocktails.

As our Summer begins to draw to a close, It’s so healing to walk into our MLAB space and be greeted with new growth and change (especially one as delicious as Strawberries and Kale).

As July draws to a close and August draws near, we decided to take this moment to clean up our MLAB Community Garden.

Plus, it was the perfect occasion for us to use our new compost bin and liners from the to try our hand at composting our garden waste. 🍃

I’ll be the first to admit that pruning plants is a bit harder than it looks.

I’m just so fortunate my fellow MLAB colleagues were able to help me.

Although it was difficult for me, I was so happy to be learning hands on with folks that I trusted and knew were going to be helpful (even during moments like on the last slide).

You may not get it right the first time, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t attempt to .

Yesterday, our MLAB "How to Upcycle your Blue Jeans" Workshop with our MLAB Artist in Residence (AIR) Phyllis Wadlington was an absolute delight for our learners of all ages!

Every month, our MLAB AIRs host unique workshops or programs for the general public to share in their gifts as well as learn how to bring their own ideas to reality in a unique and creative way.

I simply can't tell you how much it makes us smile from ear to ear to hear the hum of sewing machines, chitter chatter amongst workshop participants, and excited feet moving back and forth on the floor as our MLAB space comes to life during this workshop.

MLAB Field Notes - 06/27/2025

It’s Summer…Summertime!

This week, we kicked off the Summer season with our Cambridge Plays () event; MLAB IN THE PARK.

We would love to thank all of our lovely MLAB neighbors for celebrating with us in Cambridge’s Jill Brown Rhone Park, where technology and community meet.

Our second annual Cambridge Plays almost seemed like it was going to be toast, like some of the plants in our MLAB Community Garden after a 100 degree day this week.

Nonetheless, it’s amazing what a little brainstorming can do. 💙
