Thanks to a generous grant by Harvard's Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability, the first instalment of the Wilder Lecture Series on Biodiversity is today at 6pm Eastern Time.
The speaker is Dr. Dennis Lui, Vice President of Education, E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation.
"The predicted sixth mass extinction is among the most significant threats to the world. Half-Earth is a call by the late Dr. E.O. Wilson to protect half the land and sea, thus reversing the species extinction crisis and ensuring long-term planetary health. The Half-Earth lecture will cover how saving half the Earth helps nature and the climate for our long-term recovery."

Happy New Year, everyone!
1) GENERAL MEETING DOODLE POLL - We'd love to start off 2023 with a bang, and so we're going to have our first meeting of the year on either Monday the 30th or Tuesday the 31st. Please help us select the time that works best for this first meeting, so we have it in the books by the first week of class!
There are a lot of opportunities to get involved, including, but not limited to, the group looking to start a HESEC peer reviewed journal, blog writers, event planning, and a call for folks to weigh in on curricular improvements.

Oh, and a message from a student at MIT about a hackathon there that is open to Harvard students (undergrad and grad):
"My name is Jasmin Kern, and I am a senior at MIT and the director of the Cultivate Tomorrow Hackathon -- the 1st international hackathon focused on cellular agriculture and precision fermentation for the food industry! We are looking for students (undergrad and grad) interested in applying their unique knowledge and skills to revolutionize our food system and build a sustainable future for our planet. All interested students are encouraged to apply regardless of their knowledge of cellular agriculture, as we will provide all necessary education.
Applications close on October 20th, and students are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Students have the option to compete in one of two tracks for a $2000 cash prize:
Track 1: Build an advertising strategy and scientific communication platform for a novel cultured food product with mentoring from a pioneer in one of the industry’s leading start-ups
Track 2: Create a research proposal and analysis of a potential ingredient, material, or novel technology that can improve the production of a novel cell-cultured or fermented product with mentoring from a leading researcher at one of the industry’s tech start-ups.
The hacking period will take place from January 15 - March 20, and the final event will take place in April. We want to attract as many students from across the US as possible and hope you will forward this event to any mailing lists, newsletters, departments or other student groups that may be interested in partaking in this event. This is a chance to become immersed in a rapidly growing industry and change the future of food!
Here is our website for more information and application form: https://www.cultivate-tmrw.com/
I attached a brief flier outlining this event for students. Please email me if you have any further questions. Thank you so much for your support, we hope that this event will help bring students together to work on building a better future.
Best,
Jasmin Kern

HESEC is organizing an in-person cocktail hour Friday, Sept 30, @ 7:00 pm. It will be in Harvard Square at the fireside area in Nubar (16 Garden St, Cambridge) inside the Sheraton Commander Hotel. This event is open to everyone. If you happen to be in town for the Convocation, or are visiting or living in the area, it would be great to see you there. We will try to cross promote with the Management and International Relations Clubs so we can see more of our HES friends. Hope you take this unique opportunity to network and share time with our community. We have set the time so you can still attend the 5:00 to 6:30pm session of the HESA Grad Fest event. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Virtual Happy Hours next week!
Join us at the Harvard Extension School Environmental Club (HESEC) next week for two Happy Hours / Socializing via Zoom at 6am and 6pm Boston time on September 19th (Two times to accommodate international folks!)
Let’s start the new term off by meeting new classmates and reconnecting with old friends.
When I say “old friends,” I mean “old” as in length of acquaintance, not the of age of the person. We’re all peers here, no matter our age.
But, if you’re asking, I’m 43 years old I have two small children, so I’m exhausted and my back hurts. Thanks for asking.
Please email [email protected] for the Zoom link.
See you next week!
- The HESEC Team
[Editors note: Mark, the email looks good, but please remove the back pain joke before you send it out]
