Problem-based learning helped boost my underserved students’ engagement 10/12/2022

https://www.eschoolnews.com/2022/10/12/problem-based-learning-underserved-students/

"Throughout the course of the project development, I watched my students approach problems from different angles and come up with solutions to real-life issues that they experience every day. My students at Hope of Detroit Academy identified urban decay as an issue that was close to home but affects many other areas in the U.S., and they have seen firsthand how it takes a toll on their community economically, socially, psychologically, and physically. They landed on developing an app to track and report abandoned homes and illegal dumping sites in Detroit to community groups that lead clean-up efforts"

Problem-based learning helped boost my underserved students’ engagement As educators, our charge is to impart knowledge onto our students, open new doors for them, and encourage them to stretch beyond their comfort zones. We try to show them every day that they are cap…

4 Ways Classroom Design Impacts Executive Functioning 10/05/2022

Executive functions develop biologically but also through experience. Students need to practice executive functioning skills just like they need to practice phonetic skills, math facts, and reading comprehension skills. Therefore, teachers have a responsibility and, more important, an opportunity, to cultivate these skills. The design of the classroom is one way to support these skills.

4 Ways Classroom Design Impacts Executive Functioning Effective classroom design can help elementary students develop skills like organization and task initiation.

The Role of Parents in Recovering from Learning Loss and Literacy 09/28/2022

Then I learned from the research that shows that parental involvement in their children's learning is a more powerful predictor of academic success than any other variable, including race, including class. Families, not schools, are the biggest determinants of their children's learning, and our system isn't doing enough about that.

The Role of Parents in Recovering from Learning Loss and Literacy I spoke recently with Alejandro Gibes de Gac. He’s the CEO and founder of Springboard Collaborative. Alejandro and I first got to know each other through a series of conversations about innovation in his own organization, but I've become quite compelled by his broader message around the importance...

Tech Companies — Your Best Investment is K-12 STEM Education - Innovation & Tech Today 08/31/2022

With fewer teachers renewing their contracts and resources slimming for students, US public schools’ ability to provide STEM education will continue to lag, further dulling the US’ competitive edge globally in science and engineering. The effort to fill this gap has so far mostly fallen on the public education system, but private tech companies should be equally as concerned about the long-term impact these shortages will have on the US STEM talent pipeline of tomorrow. Children given the resources and attention to excel in STEM at the K-12 level will become the tech leaders of tomorrow, so private tech companies must integrate support for public, private and charter education into their business plans.

Following the lessons of learning science in schools isn’t convenient - The Hechinger Report 08/20/2022

"Sanjay Sarma, vice president for Open Learning at MIT and a mechanical engineer, sees a fundamental assumption underlying this model: “The mind is a sheet of paper for a professor to write on.” But that’s the wrong way to think about education, he said. The right way, he argued, is to think of a human as a plant to which educators offer fertilizer and water and sunlight when it needs it, or wants it, most."

"Science has been recognized as the cornerstone to industry, economic development and national prosperity. While the promise of STEM is there, the country, as a whole, has been slow to realize it. As the global science engine moves forward, America’s science program is highly dependent on foreign expertise."

Intel might be Ohio's 'Sputnik.' Why we need more science in schools | Opinion Intel maybe a gamechanger. In the words of Enterprise Captain Jean-Luc Picard, COSI Frederic Bertley calls on Ohioans to “make it so” with STEM.

To Rethink Math Education, Focus on Common Ground 08/15/2022

A recent issue of our journal, The State Education Standard, is devoted to Advancing Math & Science Instruction. In it, various authors address different aspects of the current state of math and science education. One of the key takeaways for me is that there is a great deal of agreement on various aspects of how to improve math achievement, and there are also some areas where honest disagreement exists. When I see the disagreement, I challenge myself to examine how both sides might be respected .to further the best interest of students."

To Rethink Math Education, Focus on Common Ground Calculus? Data Science? Embrace the “and,” says a response to the recent forum.
