Executive functions develop biologically but also through experience. Students need to practice executive functioning skills just like they need to practice phonetic skills, math facts, and reading comprehension skills. Therefore, teachers have a responsibility and, more important, an opportunity, to cultivate these skills. The design of the classroom is one way to support these skills.

CERN and Solvay, a Belgian science company, today announced the launch of the CERN-Solvay education programme. The three-year partnership, developed by these two leading scientific organisations, aims to inspire young people around the world to get involved in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects and aspire to related careers. It will form part of the education portfolio of Science Gateway, CERN's new flagship project for science education and outreach due to open in summer 2023.

With fewer teachers renewing their contracts and resources slimming for students, US public schools’ ability to provide STEM education will continue to lag, further dulling the US’ competitive edge globally in science and engineering.The effort to fill this gap has so far mostly fallen on the public education system, but private tech companies should be equally as concerned about the long-term impact these shortages will have on the US STEM talent pipeline of tomorrow. Children given the resources and attention to excel in STEM at the K-12 level will become the tech leaders of tomorrow, so private tech companies must integrate support for public, private and charter education into their business plans.

A recent issue of our journal, The State Education Standard, is devoted to Advancing Math & Science Instruction. In it, various authors address different aspects of the current state of math and science education. One of the key takeaways for me is that there is a great deal of agreement on various aspects of how to improve math achievement, and there are also some areas where honest disagreement exists. When I see the disagreement, I challenge myself to examine how both sides might be respected .to further the best interest of students."
