📢 Oxnard Union High School District Leadership Update

Superintendent Dr. Thomas McCoy has informed the Board of Trustees that he will be leaving OUHSD at the end of this school year. His last day with the district will be June 30, 2026.

I want to express my sincere appreciation to Dr. McCoy for his years of service, leadership, and commitment to our students, staff, and families. One of the qualities I have most admired is his consistent presence throughout our community. Dr. McCoy has been visible at school events, athletic competitions, performances, community meetings, and activities across the district. Having worked across multiple educational systems, I know that this level of engagement from the leader of a large district is uncommon and deeply valued.

As the Board moves forward, our focus must remain on two critical priorities: maintaining the district’s long-term financial stability and conducting a thoughtful, transparent search for our next superintendent.

To begin that work, Vice President of the Board Trustee Flores-Haro and I met with two potential consultants who could help guide the superintendent search process. The district has also issued an RFP for a superintendent search firm.

This transition is still very new, and the Board has not yet had the opportunity to fully discuss and plan for the process ahead. The timeline to have a new superintendent in place by July 1, 2026 is extremely tight. I will strongly advocate for a careful and deliberate process, including keeping the option of an interim superintendent on the table if additional time is needed.

It is important that we provide meaningful opportunities for staff, students, families, and community members to help shape the profile of our next superintendent and participate in this important decision.

I will continue to share updates as I am able. To contact the Board of Trustees visit: https://www.oxnardunion.org/board-of-trustees/board-members

Did you know that high school students can take classes at a community college and earn college-level credits toward certificates, degrees, and/or to meet admissions requirements for a 4-year College or University?

Fun fact: This program is not new. I was a dual enrollment high school student 26 years ago! Taking college classes while in high school helped me graduate early, earn my associate degree, and transfer to UC Santa Barbara quickly. Although this program has been around for many years, families are still unaware of this great option.

The next opportunity to enroll begins on November 13 for the Spring 2026 term. Talk to your high school counselor or a community college dual enrollment coordinator/specialist to learn how to get started!

Housing for teachers and staff, especially affordable options, continues to be an important topic across the state and the nation. Ventura County ranks among California’s most expensive housing markets, with a median home price near $900,000 and fewer than 15 percent of households able to afford a median-priced home.

The projects funded by Measure E, approved by voters in November 2024, were determined before I joined the board. Among the list is a feasibility study for workforce housing and preparation of district-owned land in Camarillo, located behind Rancho Campana High School, for potential future use.

It is essential that our community and local government work together to determine what role K–12 schools, public funds, and bond measures should play in addressing this national housing crisis.

I encourage residents of District 5 and the greater Camarillo community to get involved and help connect these important conversations.
