Chequamegon? How do you even say that?! Write your guesses at how you would say it and we will pick a winner to have bragging rights for the day! The Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest has many trailheads and hosts most of our Northwoods Foray hotspots! What will we find there? Hopefully mushrooms including black trumpets, chanterelles, lobster mushrooms, and more! But you will find lots of mycological friends, and a good time at the Northwoods Foray coming up this next weekend, so sign up now at the Wisconsin Mycological Society (.org) website, and get into the woods! You only have 3 days before it starts though, so do it NOW!!

Northwoods Foray's Keynote speaker, Stephen Russell Stephen Russell presents Saturday's Sept 12th. Stephen will also be on-site with his fellow Mycota Lab member Ryan Peace conducting sampling for sequencing of our finds!

Stephen is the director of Mycota Labs and is a driving force in keeping mycologial societies at the heart of discovery in mycology. Check out the MycoMap Network, the Continental Mycoblitz, and the Certified Fungal Habitat program to learn more about his work, and lots more about fungi!

To register for Northwoods Foray in Cable WI, visit the WMS website (link in our bio).

Our Friday speaker at Northwoods Foray 2026 will be Lauren Ré, a mycologist pursuing her Master's degree at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Lauren studies the wonderful waxycap Family, Hygrophoraceae. These colorful, ecologically-diverse and deeply understudied fungi pop up all over Wisconsin, including around Cable, WI, but who are they? What are they doing out there? Dare we ask.. are any eat-able? Learn about them with Lauren, and then follow up the next day with Stephen Russell as he presents Saturday on fungal sequencing, conservation, and more.
