"Our data in the hands of strangers immediately raises concerns: privacy, consent, control, access, costs. We take Nomination #3 for the MHF 2026 Defender Award from just such a question, asked in committee hearing where it counts.
Many will recall that Governor Whitmer called for live, real-time access to patient health information during state COVID tracking in 2020.
Michigan took a big step toward that goal when the House Health Policy Committee heard House Bills 4037 and 4038."

"Medications can be expensive, and state lawmakers would love to fix that. Today we have nomination #2 for the 2026 MHF Defender Award.

Michigan Senate Bills 3-5 came to the Finance, Insurance, and Consumer Protection Committee on April 23, 2025.

Discussion centered on SB 3 creating a Pharma Drug Affordability Board. A PDAB would follow complex formulas to control pharma prices. Other states have PDABs, Michigan should, too.

SB 4 would require all insurance plans to comply.

SB 5 would require all Medicaid plans to comply.

Amid all these plans, one senator asks the essential question...."
