Nativity Career Day ~~ Exploring the Possibilities!

Career Day here at Nativity is one of our students’ favorites – it’s a peek into what their futures could hold. Our students got to spend time with a group of parents skilled in an array of different occupations, i.e, a small business owner; a Childrens’ Book author; a Cardiology nurse practitioner; an IT Manager for the US Senate; a research physiologist, Veterans Affairs; an Air Force Pilot; a Space and Flight Test Engineer; a K-9 Officer with the Arlington Police Department; a Business Risk Management/Fraud Investigator; Chief of Staff, for a US House Member, and a product and corporate strategist in the Telecommunications Industry. From brainstorming a children’s book, to jumping into exercise class, to discovering what it takes to fly a jet, or training and caring for a police dog, our students left this event excited and open to even more possibilities for their futures.

A great big thank you to Julie Wilson and Elaine Vrooman for organizing this informative – and fun! – event. Special thanks to those who shared their stories with our teachers and students: Monica Stoltzfus, Katie Mueller, Nicholette Dunleavy, Andrew & Stacey Ivie, Chelsea Kemlage, Maria Slahetka, Jared Gollie, Senait Tewolde, Lincoln Bonner, Rebecca Keightley, and Robert Hegblom.

Nativity School: Soaring to New Heights!

As a STEM School, part of our desire to bring new and engaging opportunities to our students led us to welcome Fairfax 1, one of the two Bell 429 helicopters Fairfax County Police Helicopter Division operates, to land in the field just behind Nativity School, to the raucous applause of all of its students and teachers. The field, often used for soccer games and church festivals, became the hot spot to listen to Officer Anthony Quarto, Officer Jon Kietz, and Pilot Mike Mountjoy discuss how they, and their colleagues, provide tactical police aviation support, aeromedical evacuation, search & rescue, and other specialized air support within Fairfax County and beyond, to enhance public safety and welfare.

As Second Lieutenant John Lieb, with the Public Affairs Bureau, Fairfax County Public Safety Headquarters, says, “Whether its providing aerial back up to officers apprehending a fleeing subject, searching a wooded area for lost hikers, or providing aid for a patient with critical injuries, the mission of our flight officers is much the same as officers on the ground. They just arrive a little differently.

Kindness is Their Currency

The sound of children’s love and laughter filled the classroom near the end of March as our First Graders gathered to learn how to create handmade soap. Once made, the soap would be given as a “thank you” to donors who contribute to the First Grade April Service Project: Raising money to build a home for a family in need.

As part of the service project, First Grade students will collect donations for Kind Leaders and Operation Starfish. Kind Leaders is a child-led charity that raises money for Operation Starfish and thanks its donors with homemade soap. Its goal is to raise $5,000 – enough to build one home for a family in need – and our First Graders have partnered with the group again this school year. Last year’s First Grade class contributed a significant amount toward this goal as part of its service project.

“The First Graders have been learning about countries in need and the mission of both charities,” explained Katy Colella, Nativity’s First Grade Teacher. “ We’ve discussed how they might be too young to travel to places, like Haiti or Honduras, to help build the homes themselves, but they can still make a meaningful difference by raising money to support those who do travel – such as Monsignor Bob and other Nativity parishioners.”

It’s not too late to donate to our effort. If you would like to, please contact Katy Colella, First Grade Teacher, at [email protected].

Seventh Grade Performs Living Stations

One of the most revered events of our most Holy Week is “Living Stations of the Cross.” Performed by the Seventh Grade here at Nativity School, our Living Stations re-enactment is always a reverent, very moving, personal dramatization of the Passion of Christ. In preparation for Good Friday observance and the Easter celebration, we journey through the Stations of the Cross as a school gathered in the Church several times throughout the Lenten period, culminating in the emotional drama of Living Stations the week of Easter.

Nativity Students Serving Up An Important Lesson

A retelling of the story of the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt, The Seder is a favorite Lenten tradition here at Nativity School. Filled with history, symbolism, and reverence, this story is drawn right from the Book of Exodus in The Hebrew Bible. Gathered together on Holy Thursday, we commemorated a Jewish ritual service and ceremonial meal held the first night or first two nights of Passover.

Each middle school student plays a part in its presentation: 8th grade provides and prepares the food; 7th grade sets the table, and 6th grade leads us in prayer, presents the readings, and directs the drama of the Coming of Elijah. Our 5th grade gets involved, too, by cleaning up afterward. It's a memory we all cherish.
