August was a busy month! Lots of fun things happening, including hiking in Bryce National Park and doing the entire Zion Narrows in one loooong day (only took us 12 hours of some of the roughest hiking I’ve ever done—but worth it!). I love southern Utah—so much of my youth/early adult life spent there and shaped me into who I am. Spectacular country. I can’t believe it took me so long to get my kids there! But they’re actually at the perfect age to experience it. Now I’m ready to focus on work!

Ah, Mary Oliver! This is a timely poem. People are waking up to the very real consequences of climate change. Can we do better?

More Rilke. I have been reading Letters to a Young Poet this last few days. Such exquisite insights. Why is it so hard to live the question? We want answers. We want certainty. We want what we cannot have. I'm learning to embrace the uncertainty. I'm learning to accept that I don't know. I'm learning to focus on being, not doing. It isn't always easy. But it seems a worthy journey.

I watched Jo Jo Rabbit this weekend. Beautiful movie. This Rilke quote was at the end and it got me back into reading a lot of his work. He is phenomenal. This quote is particularly significant to me as I learn to accept and allow my feelings. For far too long I was afraid of my feelings and emotions, I let them define me. But no feeling is final--they come and go, then come and go again. It's just the way it is ("This is the Way"). Don't fight it. Live it. Anyway, hope this helps shift things into a healthier perspective for someone today.

Here's the whole poem:
God speaks to each of us as he makes us,
then walks with us silently out of the night.

These are the words we dimly hear:

You sent out beyond your recall,
go to the limits of your longing.
Embody me.

Flare up like a flame
and make big shadows I can move in.

Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.
Just keep going. No feeling is final.
Don't let yourself lose me.

Nearby is the country they call life.
You will know it by its seriousness.

Give me your hand.
