Hello everyone!!

In just a few days we will celebrate Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month!!!! At Bowdoin, we celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) identities in April instead of May, when it is nationally recognized, because of our academic calendar. Throughout the month, the Asian Students Alliance (ASA) and Student Center for Multicultural Life (SCML) will be sponsoring a series of events encompassing different fields and interests. The events and their descriptions are included in this poster!

The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants. In 1978, AAPI Heritage Week was nationally recognized, and in 1992, it was extended to a month. The first Asian Heritage Month program will be on THURSDAY APRIL 5 at 7PM in Kresge Auditorium. Join us for a lecture with former Dean of the School of Education at University of San Francisco and current Professor of Asian Studies and Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Dr. Kevin Kumashiro. He will be discussing broader social movements for democracy and social justice in education.

Later next week, please join us for a concert with Korean American youtube singer and songwriter Clara C that SATURDAY APRIL 8 at 8pm in Kresge Auditorium!!
