Mrs. Jackson’s Reading Room Ideas to make literacy engaging in the elementary classroom.

Thank you to the Brunswick Education Foundation
for making this activity possible through your generous grant. 🩷

💛🔨 Building letters, building confidence!
Today our little learners got hands-on with letter construction, sound practice, and LOTS of smiles. There’s just something magical about watching them hammer, tap, and create their way into stronger literacy skills. ✨📚

We’re nailing our letter work at Walter Kidder Elementary School! 😉🔠 Brunswick City Schools

Today our Kidder readers got hands-on with nonsense words to strengthen their decoding muscles! 💪📚

We practiced sorting each word by its syllable type — closed, open, magic e, and bossy r— and the students CRUSHED it.
They were touching, reading, sorting, checking, and teaching each other why each word belongs where. 🧠💡

Nonsense words = real reading growth.
Engagement + movement = happy learners.
And I call that a WIN. 🙌💜

1. Glue holiday cut-outs to a piece of posterboard.
2. Laminate.
3. Use dry erase markers to write letters or words on each piece.
4. Have students wind up toys and set them down on the mat.
5. Students must read the word or letter their toy lands on.

Our kindergarteners are having a reel good time today! They’re fishing for letters and practicing their letter names and sounds — one colorful catch at a time! 🎣💦

Hands-on learning is the best kind of learning… and it’s even better when it feels like play! 💙💚💜

🚨 More than 60% of 4th graders in the U.S. aren’t reading at grade level. As teachers, we deserve better tools to change that.

That’s why I joined The Teachers Table 🍎—a new platform that brings together the best of research, practice, and community. Think TPT + Pinterest + Insta + FB…but everything is research-backed and designed to actually work in our classrooms.

Easy phonics game you can make that can very used over and over again! Using students' names makes it more personalized and students are therefore more engaged. If you try this, let me know how your students like it!

These CVC slides from
TPT have really helped my Kinders blend sounds together to make words. Remind them to keep the sound of each letter going continuously until they reach the next sound. You could draw your own slides at home. We use little dinosaur toys to go down the slides, but you could use anything! They loved these.

Adding some touch lights to our Heggerty lesson. Students have to tap the first, middle, or last light depending on where they hear the /ch/ sound in each word.
