💬 TALK & CONVERSE

Talk through your daily activities, share new words as you go, and invite your child to tell you more with open-ended questions like “how” and “why.” These simple conversations help your child build language confidence and make new words stick.

📖 READ TOGETHER

Reading together opens up a world of new words your child might not hear every day. When you come across something unfamiliar, pause to explain it in simple terms, relate it to something your child already knows, and invite them to try using the word in their own way.

🎲 MAKE WORDS FUN

Make words fun by playing games, singing songs, and exploring rhymes together. Try swapping out everyday words for more colorful ones—like saying enormous or gigantic instead of big. When learning feels playful, new words become part of your child’s world.

It’s not about cramming in as many words as possible. What matters most is giving your child lots of chances to hear, talk about, and use new words in real life.

📚✨ SMALL MOMENTS. BIG LITERACY OPPORTUNITIES.
Small, everyday interactions can provide significant opportunities for literacy development.

Supporting a child's reading and writing goes beyond worksheets or flashcards and doesn't require turning the home into a classroom. Research shows that families can integrate meaningful literacy experiences into daily routines.

Explore SPED & More encourages families to foster literacy in ways that are meaningful, interactive, and connected to real-life experiences.

📖 Interactive Storytime
Reading aloud can be enhanced by discussing the text. Families are encouraged to ask open-ended questions before, during, and after reading, such as, "What do you think will happen next?" or "Why do you think the character made that choice?"

✏️ Everyday Writing
Providing authentic purposes for writing helps children understand that written language carries meaning. Children may write their names on artwork, assist with grocery lists, label household items, compose notes, or create reminders as part of daily routines.

🔎 Word Explorations
Vocabulary development can occur through everyday experiences. Families might read signs during a walk, notice new words at the grocery store, discuss menus, compare product labels, or talk about unfamiliar words encountered in conversation.

The primary goal is not perfection, but rather to create frequent opportunities for reading, writing, conversation, and exploration as a family.

Consistent engagement in everyday moments can contribute to a lifelong foundation for learning.

Meaningful back-and-forth conversations help children develop vocabulary, language, and critical-thinking skills. Talking about experiences, ideas, and things beyond the immediate moment gives children opportunities to use and understand richer language (Harvard Graduate School of Education [HGSE], 2026).

📖 Shared Interactive Reading
Reading with a child—not simply to them—creates opportunities to ask questions, discuss new vocabulary, make predictions, connect ideas, and talk about the story. These interactions support language and literacy development (National Center on Improving Literacy [NCIL], n.d.).

At school, explicit, systematic literacy instruction provides students with structured opportunities to develop foundational reading skills while building vocabulary, knowledge, and comprehension.

🍎📚 EVERY SCHOOL DAY MATTERS: GEORGIA ATTENDANCE IS IMPROVING! 📚🍎

There is encouraging news for Georgia’s students, families, and educators. According to the attendance data highlighted by the Georgia Department of Education, the statewide chronic absenteeism rate has continued to decline, reaching 17.7% for the 2025–2026 school year.

📉 The trend shows progress:
2021–2022: 23.9%
2023–2024: 21.3%
2024–2025: 19.5%
2025–2026: 17.7%

But what does chronic absenteeism actually mean?

A student is considered chronically absent when they miss 10% or more of the days they are enrolled in school. In a traditional 180-day school year, that’s approximately 18 days—and the absences can be for any reason.

💗 At Explore SPED & More, I also believe attendance conversations need to go beyond simply asking, “Why isn’t this student at school?”

For some students, particularly students with disabilities and learning differences, attendance can intersect with academic frustration, unmet support needs, transportation or family barriers, physical or mental health concerns, and difficulty feeling successful or connected at school.

That is why identifying the barrier behind the absence matters.

When schools, families, and communities work together to understand what is keeping a student from consistently accessing instruction, we have a better opportunity to provide meaningful support.

Progress is worth celebrating—but with nearly 1 in 6 Georgia public-school students represented by a 17.7% chronic absenteeism rate, there is still important work ahead.

🍑📚 GEORGIA FAMILIES: IEP vs. 504 PLAN—WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Both plans support students with disabilities, but they serve different purposes.

🔵 An IEP is provided under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). It is designed for an eligible student whose disability affects educational performance and who requires specially designed instruction. An IEP includes individualized services, measurable annual goals, and progress monitoring.

🟢 A 504 Plan is provided under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. It protects a student whose physical or mental impairment substantially limits one or more major life activities. The plan primarily provides accommodations and access supports that remove disability-related barriers.

💛 What do they have in common?

Both are individualized according to the student’s disability-related needs, provide legal protections and school-based supports, and are designed to help the student access a free appropriate public education.

The central question is often:

➡️ Does the student need accommodations to access learning?
➡️ Or does the student need specialized instruction in addition to accommodations?

Every child’s situation is different. Families may request that the school evaluate their child when a disability is suspected and educational support may be needed.
