We are deeply saddened by the passing of Laura. As an elder, she carried a wealth of knowledge, wisdom, and history that shaped our community. Laura’s dedication to her work was a reflection of her love for the students. We are immensely grateful for the time, wisdom, and heart she shared. May she rest in peace.

BreeAnna Polk is a recent graduate of the University of Montana. She received her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, with minors in Music and Reading Education, and a certificate in Reading Education. BreeAnna is pursuing her master's degree in School Counseling at UM and will be teaching at Browning Middle School on the Blackfeet Reservation. Born and raised on the Blackfeet Reservation, BreeAnna looks forward to the opportunity to give back to her community.
BreeAnna has been a musical influence within her community. She has performed throughout Europe, in Carnegie Hall, and at the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference with the University of Montana Tuba and Euphonium Consort. She was also a member of the Grizzly Marching Band for three years and, during her final year, traveled to Frisco, Texas, for the NCAA FCS National Championship game. Throughout her time at the University of Montana, BreeAnna participated in a variety of musical groups.

BreeAnna graduated from Browning High School in 2021. During her time at the University, she worked with GEAR UP, TRIO, Montana Media Lab, and the Montana American Indians in Math and Science programs. Her goal while working with these programs was to advocate for Indigenous students. As a peer mentor, she helped fellow students with time management, scheduling, finding funding opportunities, and academic advising. As an instructor, BreeAnna shared tribal knowledge and worked directly with Indigenous students participating in STEM activities. These experiences helped shape her teaching skills as she prepared for student teaching.

BreeAnna's future goals include continuing to advocate for Indigenous students in academia and graduating from her master's program. She is excited to be in the classroom and hopes to inspire others to pursue their passions.
