Once upon a time…

It was the thing to do as much as possible and be a star in everything because that’s what gets you into a “good” college. Right!?

This narrative still exists in 2026 but it is not accurate.

As a professional college consultant reflecting on this past admissions cycle, I can tell you that colleges are sending signals of what really matters.

So here’s what you need to consider instead:

1️⃣ make a list of all the things your involved in outside of the classroom
2️⃣ cross off any that you are doing for someone else or because you feel like you have to
3️⃣ put a 💚 next to the one (or few) that you actually love and are doing because they’re fulfilling (you would do it regardless of college apps)
💚💚 there’s your sign … this is what colleges care about. Done. Simple. Now focus on that!

Our teenagers do not need to be this stressed out and doing more than even their parents are doing in life.

Let’s shut down this toxic and untrue narrative and get back to balance and happiness. You will have so much more to share in your essays and activities list when you’re not overextended and stressed to the max.
