If you’re homeschooling because you want your child to have more freedom in how they learn, you’re going to love Troopers. 🥾🪵🐞

Our upcoming 12 week fall and winter series is not about sitting down and being told what to learn. 🍂🌲

It’s about getting outside, getting messy, getting curious, and having a say in how you spend your time.

Maybe you’re helping in the garden.

Maybe you’re building something.

Maybe you’re playing a game with friends, making a nature craft, exploring the woods, or spending an hour completely absorbed in something you discovered.

And sometimes, we won’t know exactly what the day is going to look like either. 💭

Because we follow the children.

Our forest school facilitators watch for their interests, ask questions, introduce new ideas, and scaffold the learning that naturally grows from their curiosity.

That’s the beauty of forest school. 🌲✏️

Research has found that regular Forest School experiences can support cooperation, mood, nature connection, creativity, problem solving, and other areas of child development.

We’re not just teaching subjects.

We’re helping children become capable, curious, confident learners.

Troopers is for ages 6 to 10 and meets right here in Brooksville on our 1.5 acres of wooded, fenced property.

We’re Step Up approved, fully insured, and our certified forest school facilitators are background checked and CPR certified.

Our 12 week fall and winter session is enrolling now.

If you’ve been looking for a homeschool community where your child can learn through nature, play, choice, and real experiences, this might be exactly what you’ve been looking for.

Come join us in the woods. 🌲🍄‍🟫🪵🔎

Looking for something a little different for your child this year?

Join us for our Palmetto + Pine Open House and come experience one of Brooksville’s most unique learning communities. 🌲

At Palmetto + Pine, childhood looks a little different. Our days are filled with nature exploration, open-ended play, hands-on projects, storytelling, creativity, and plenty of muddy boots. We believe children learn best when they have time to wonder, create, move, and connect both with the natural world and with one another.

Whether you’re homeschooling, exploring alternative education options, or simply looking for a more connected, play-based experience for your child, our Open House is the perfect chance to see what makes Palmetto + Pine so special.

Families from Brooksville, Spring Hill, and across Central Florida are invited to:
🐞 Tour our outdoor learning spaces
🪵 Meet our teachers and community
⛺️ Learn about our Fall & Winter programs
🐛 Ask questions about enrollment and Step Up Scholarship options
🦅 Let your children experience the magic of nature-based play

If you’ve been searching for a place where childhood is protected, curiosity is encouraged, and learning happens through play and real-life experiences, we’d love to meet you.

🪵🐞 What if learning could feel a little more like childhood?

More time outside.
More muddy hands.
More questions that don’t have easy answers.
More room to move, wonder, build, imagine, and simply be a kid.

That’s what we’re creating at Palmetto + Pine, Brooksville’s play-based forest school. 🌲

Our Fall programs are now enrolling, classes starting September 23rd with something for every stage of the adventure:

🌱 SPROUTS | Walking–5 + caregiver
A gentle introduction to nature for our littlest explorers. We follow their curiosity through sensory play, nature invitations, stories, art, and plenty of time to explore.
📅 Wednesdays + Fridays (at capacity) | 9–10:30 AM
🍂 12-week series begins September 23 & 25
💛 $300 total — save $50 when you enroll by August 31!

🐛 RANGERS | Ages 5–7
Early academics, reimagined. Reading, writing, math, science, and comprehension are woven into hands-on nature exploration and meaningful play.
📅 Fridays | 10 AM–12 PM
🍂 Begins September 25
💛 $200/month

🌲 TROOPERS | Ages 6–10
Our forest school experience for kids ready for deeper adventure, independence, and connection with the natural world. Think exploration, problem-solving, risky play, creativity, resilience, and real-world learning, not worksheets and rigid academics.

And because we believe access matters, all of our programs are Step Up approved and we are a direct-pay Step Up provider.

Outside is the lesson plan. 🪵🔍🍄

Not because we don’t have a plan.

Because the plan starts with paying attention.

At Palmetto + Pine, we don’t need to manufacture a lesson when the world around us is already offering one.

A fallen log becomes a balancing challenge.

A handful of dirt becomes a lesson in soil, roots, decomposition, and life.

A bird overhead becomes a reason to stop, wonder, observe, identify, and ask questions.

Rain changes the landscape and suddenly we’re talking about water, erosion, movement, and cause and effect.

A disagreement over a stick becomes an opportunity to practice communication, negotiation, and problem-solving.

And a child who spends an hour deeply investigating something they chose? That’s learning, too.

Research on nature-based education is finding what many of us have seen firsthand: learning in natural environments can support children’s engagement, social development, wellbeing, self-concept, and certain academic learning outcomes. A systematic review of 147 studies found measurable benefits across these areas, while research specifically examining nature-based early childhood education has found positive associations with self-regulation, social-emotional development, social skills, and play.

But perhaps the most important part is this:

Nature gives children something worth paying attention to.

They aren’t just being told about the world.

They’re touching it.
Moving through it.
Questioning it.
Testing ideas.
Making connections.
Getting things wrong.
Trying again.

That’s why “outside is the lesson plan” doesn’t mean less learning.

It means learning that is connected to something real.

🌿 The curriculum is there.
🐛 The questions are there.
☀️ The environment is there.
🪵 And the children are invited to be active participants in all of it.

This is what nature-based learning looks like at Palmetto + Pine.

Not bringing school outside.

Rethinking what learning can look like when the outside is the classroom.

🌲🔍🔬 HELP US CLEAR THE LIST 🛝📓🪏

We’ve grown so much in the last year and a half and none of it was done alone!!

We’re so grateful for the continuous support we receive. From help with building projects, landscaping, materials, recyclables, and help figuring out how to bring ideas to life.

As a small, tiny but mighty, little business every donation makes a real impact on our community and learning opportunities for our explorers.

With back to school season here, many people and organizations are clearing the lists; the wishlists of teachers and alternative education programs. So we’re adding ours to the mix of all the incredible educators that deserve support!

If you can’t purchase something from our list but still want to help, there’s many ways. Share this post and our link, liking and commenting on it help too. If you’re local, we’re looking for housewares that can handle being in the Florida elements. As well as patio furniture, plants, and random items like large tree logs! 🪵

Thank YOU for being on this journey with us! We can’t wait to see you outside! ☀️

We lean heavily towards the community part 🫶

Our little forest school community 🌲

If you’re new here, I want to tell you something.

I didn’t start Palmetto + Pine because I wanted to own a business.

I started it because I couldn’t stop thinking about the kind of childhood I wanted to help protect.

I wanted children to have more afternoons climbing trees instead of rushing from one activity to the next. More muddy hands. More scraped knees. More freedom to ask questions, take risks, make friends, and fall in love with the world around them.

At the same time, I was learning how to rebuild my own life after endometriosis changed so much of it. I found myself searching for something meaningful. Something my husband and I could build together that left this world a little better than we found it.

Palmetto + Pine became that dream. 🖤

Every family who walks through our gate adds another chapter to it.

My hope has never been to create the biggest forest school. It’s to create a place families think of when they say, “This feels like the childhood I want for my kids.”

A place where parents find community alongside their children. Where kids are known by name. Where wonder is protected. Where childhood is never something we rush through.

If you’ve been looking for something different, maybe you’ve found it. 🌲🐞
