Afro-Latino Festival of New York

Afro-Latino Festival of New York Year 12 July 22-26, 2026. Our mission is to provide a positive public space to pay tribute to the African roots of people from Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Afro-Latino Festival of New York celebrates over a decade of honoring the contributions of Afrolatinos through networking, cultural exchange, artistic showcases, culinary presentations, and educational programming. Entering its 10th year, the Afrolatino Festival NYC is an annual multi-day event celebrating the contributions of Afro-latinos through networking, cultural exchange, artistic showcases, culinary presentations, and education. It serves as an important opportunity for organizations working within Afrolatino communities to raise social awareness and highlight their work. Each year we simultaneously commemorate the International Decade for People of African Descent declared by the U.N (2015-2024) and its principles of "justice", "recognition" and "development".

Lead With Heart ❤️🇨🇴

A 7.4 earthquake has hit Colombia, and New York City is coming together to show up with love, solidarity, and action.

Afro-Latino Festival NYC has put together two community events next week to raise donations and support those affected:

📍 8/18 — Mi Casita BK
📍 8/21 — Palenque Restaurant, Williamsburg

These are open mics that inspire. Come sing, share your poetry, bring your voice, and help us create something beautiful in the name of community.

🎟️ $10 entry — your contribution will be donated to support communities in El Chocó affected by the earthquake.

Special thanks to everyone helping make these events possible and to the artists, venues, and community members showing up for Colombia. 🙏🏿 Curadora musical del vacile Rueda de Oro 🇨🇴 AgentDMZ. CHICO RARO KARENA©️💫 MiCasa BK Palenque

We celebrate the work & life of Johanna Fernandez and Denise Oliver Velez, Young Lords/Black Panther leader & Johanna Fernández, Young Lords historian & prison abolitionist who have both transitioned.

Obit by Karen Juanita Carrillo New York Amsterdam News August 1, 2026

Dr. Johanna Fernández, Dominican American historian and prison abolitionist, passed away on July 30, 2026.

A professor of history at Baruch College and the CUNY Graduate Center, Johanna Fernández was a leading scholar of the Young Lords, the Puerto Rican and Latinx radical organization whose New York chapter fought for health care, sanitation, breakfast programs, lead-poisoning testing, and community control. Her award-winning book, “The Young Lords: A Radical History,” was based on oral histories, archives, and recovered police surveillance files obtained through a Freedom of Information Law lawsuit she filed against the New York Police Department. Her suit helped uncover the Handschu files, more than one million NYPD surveillance files compiled between 1954 and 1972 on anti-Vietnam War demonstrations, civil rights rallies, early LGBTQ+ rights protests, the Black Panthers, the Young Lords, and the Nation of Islam. The NYPD had for decades claimed the files were lost.

Denise Oliver-Velez (1947-2026) powerhouse political activist, feminist, journalist, community organizer, anthropologist, and the former Minister of Economic Development of The Young Lords Party and member of the Black Panther Party, Denise Oliver-Velez will always be radical, rebellious, and militantly Black.
