Brooklyn Music School was established as an arm of the New York Music School Settlement in 1909 and was granted a separate charter from the State University of New York in 1912. BMS has a long history of staged opera: renowned mezzo soprano Risé Stevens began her career BMS and the Brooklyn Music School Playhouse was also the home of the Little Theatre Opera company in the 1920’s. Mentor Program auditions are right around the corner - on Monday, June 8th, at 6:30 pm! The BMS Mentor Program is for talented high school students who would like to pursue music at a deeper level and broaden their experiences as creative professionals.

If accepted, students will receive 

🎶A 100% scholarship for one weekly private lesson and one weekly ensemble class for the academic year September 2026 - June 2027.

🎶Training and volunteer hours as event personnel for BMS productions and performances, learning to take on roles such as stagehands and front of house. 

🎶A position assisting BMS Teaching Artists in an afterschool (ARY) class one day a week,  helping younger students on their musical journey.

🎶Access to seasonal events, workshops and outings as they arise (this could include attending a professional show or touring a college campus).

🎶An annual Mentor Songwriting Workshop and Recording Session at ShortStack NYC, writing and releasing an original song written and recorded by all the mentors

What a night celebrating 100 years of the Brooklyn Music School Playhouse! We were so fortunate to welcome our guests in to walk the halls of BMS and catch a glimpse of some fantastic student performers, followed by a show-stopping concert in the Playhouse. Hosted by Terrance McKnight, BMS honored longtime faculty member Dr. Sofya Genis, and visionary arts institution represented by Executive Director Toya Lillard. Thank you to all of our guests and supporters for helping us raise over $169,000 - you make our mission possible and sustainable. The celebration doesn’t stop here! Hailing all the way uptown from , Louis Cato joins the lineup for the Playhouse Centennial Celebration! ‘s path to becoming bandleader of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert began long before he set foot in the Ed Sullivan Theater—starting at age two, when he first took to playing the drums. Immersed in gospel and contemporary Christian music, he honed his craft from a small town in his native North Carolina all the way to the Berklee College of Music, where his deep musicality and versatility would begin to set him apart, and eventually land him in New York City. Since then, Cato has built a reputation as a Grammy-nominated, internationally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, producer, singer, and songwriter, celebrated for his rare ability to shape sound into timeless work We can’t wait for him to rock the house on Monday, April 27th.
