Many individuals become trapped through a combination of manipulation, debt, fear, and dependency. Once in the situation, barriers such as withheld documents, unclear or escalating debt, threats, isolation, and lack of access to support can make leaving feel unsafe or impossible.

These conditions are often hidden in plain sight, which is why many cases go unrecognized or unreported. Labor trafficking can affect people of all ages, backgrounds, and nationalities, and it can occur across many types of work settings.

Understanding the barriers to leaving is just as important as recognizing how trafficking starts. These barriers are often used as tools of control.
