What starts as an opportunity can quickly change.

In labor trafficking, workers may arrive expecting a job—only to be told they owe money for expenses they never agreed to. Over time, these costs increase, creating a cycle that can feel impossible to escape.

This is how forced debt is used to control and exploit.
It’s not always visible, but it happens more often than we think.

Knowing the signs is one step toward recognizing it.

Another evening of outreach. 🤍

Every outreach brings a new opportunity to connect, listen, and serve.

We’re grateful for our partners at the NYPD who continue to stand alongside us in this important work.

Together, we continue to show up with purpose.

Labor trafficking doesn’t always begin with force—it often begins with opportunity that slowly becomes control.

What may look like a job offer can involve informal recruitment, false promises about pay or conditions, and unexpected fees tied to travel, housing, or training. In some cases, individuals are then pushed into forced debt and experience increasing control over their movement, communication, or finances once the job has started.

Not all warning signs appear at the same time, and not all are visible before someone accepts the job.

If something feels unclear, inconsistent, or changes after arrival, it may be part of a larger pattern of exploitation.

Labor trafficking is a form of human trafficking where individuals are forced, coerced, or deceived into working under unfair or unsafe conditions for little or no pay. In many cases, individuals may also face abuse while being exploited.

It can happen in everyday industries—construction, domestic work, agriculture, restaurants—and often goes unnoticed because it’s hidden in plain sight.
It affects people of all ages, backgrounds, and nationalities.

Knowing the signs matters. Awareness can help protect someone’s freedom. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts.

Leaving a trafficking situation does not always mean the body and mind immediately recognize that they are safe.

After prolonged fear, coercion, and control, reminders of what happened can sometimes trigger emotional or physical responses even when the immediate danger is no longer present. Recovery may involve relearning what safety feels like, rebuilding trust, and regaining a sense of control.

Understanding these responses is an important part of creating trauma-informed support for survivors.

Not every response to danger looks like fight or flight. Understanding the 4 F's helps us see trauma through a more compassionate lens.

The way we show up for others matters.

Taking the time to notice, listen, and support can make a difference in ways we may not always see.

Awareness is one step toward prevention.

La manera en que nos presentamos para los demás importa.

Tomar el tiempo para observar, escuchar y brindar apoyo puede marcar una diferencia, incluso de formas que no siempre vemos.

La conciencia es un paso hacia la prevención.

What looks like opportunity isn’t always what it seems.

Fraud is a common tactic used in human trafficking—often beginning with trust and ending in control.

Recognizing these patterns is key to understanding how exploitation can happen.
