TOM:NYC was a three-day Makeathon to create affordable, assistive technology addressing needs of people with disabilities at New Lab in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in April of 2017.
TOM: Tikkun Olam Makers is an organization and a global movement of makers working to develop extremely affordable solutions for the unmet needs of people with disabilities.
New York’s first Tikkun Olam Makeathon, led by Brooklyn-based industrial designer Oded Shorer, was a partnership with Cornell University and the Mayor's Office for People With Disabilities and featured 15 teams of “makers” (engineers, product designers, developers and coders) who united with “need-knowers” (individuals with a deep understanding of a specific disability or challenge) to create hardware prototypes where there was no market interest due to prohibitive cost or speciality of condition.
Designs are set for online publishing for public domain use, accessible to those with similar disabilities around the world.
