Salami-slicing. It's what researchers call it when they publish tiny, safe studies instead of going for a bigger breakthrough, and it's a big part of why academic research funding is about to look different: less money for universities, more going straight to individual scientists.

Higher Ed Dive and Inside Higher Ed have been all over it, and American Association of University Professors and American Federation of Teachers aren't happy about it.

If your kid's got their eye on a STEM major, this is worth watching. The name of the school might matter less soon than whether the professor running the lab actually has funding.

There's also a bill in Congress that could decide whether your kid's sport, if it's not football or basketball, survives the next round of budget cuts.

The Southeastern Conference is fighting it, of all things. And Howard University unenrolled hundreds of incoming freshmen this week over unpaid tuition, days before move-in, so if you've got a deposit down anywhere, double check those payment deadlines.

Columbia University alumna Margaret Anderson spent four years learning just how tangled Barnard College and Columbia College really are. Sam got into the College of Arts and Sciences at University of Pennsylvania, and later transferred to The Wharton School once on campus. Both paths lead to economics, but they're not the same degree.

At the College, students work toward a Bachelor of Arts in Economics 📚, taught through lecture and theory. The Wharton School's Bachelor of Science 📈 uses case studies and requires a concentration in a specific field. Getting into one doesn't mean getting into the other.

If your kid doesn't know which major, but knows math, and finance feels like the move, this path exists at a handful of schools, and it's worth understanding before applications go out.

We'll walk you through it. The link to set up a free call is in the comments.

🪷 Privilege can buy the resume but it can't buy the reason, and admissions officers know the difference. Our latest on Substack looks at what happens when polish substitutes for substance in a college application, and what holds up instead. Full piece linked in comments.

Sasha landed at Georgetown. This is what she said about working with us.

College admissions is a process, but it's also deeply personal. The students we work with get there knowing why they belong.
