What a way to end summer on a high note at Earthology Kids! From playing and exploring to discovering the wonders of the natural world, our explorers made memories that will last long after summer ends. Every adventure brought new opportunities to connect with nature and grow as young environmental stewards. We’re so proud of all the curiosity, creativity, and kindness our explorers brought to every day. Here’s to a summer full of fun, learning, and a whole lot of love for our planet!

(P.S. We are looking forward to seeing explorers in Fall and Winter drop-in days!)

Getting our kids active helps build healthy habits, confidence, and lifelong wellness. Thanks to 's beautiful new ball courts right next door to camp, explorers were able to play pickleball, basketball, tennis, and volleyball every week!

According to Dr. Peter Gray, a research professor at Boston College, older and younger children playing together can be a win-win. Research and observation suggest that younger children often inspire creativity and imaginative play in older children, while older children have opportunities to develop their natural nurturing and caring instincts. This dynamic may also help reduce bullying and encourage more positive, compassionate interactions.

Overall, mixed-age play offers meaningful social, emotional, and developmental benefits. It fosters cooperation, creativity, empathy, and a sense of community while allowing children of different ages to learn from and care for one another.

We’re so grateful for organizations like the Ohio Department of Natural Resources that helped our explorers discover the amazing world beneath the surface of Stickney Creek! Learning about macroinvertebrates and creek biodiversity turns simple creek exploration into an opportunity to understand how every tiny creature plays an important role in a healthy ecosystem. Learning hands-on creates appreciation and connection to nature. Thank you, Department of Natural Resources, for making learning about Ohio’s waterways so meaningful!

Congratulations to Museum Research Associate and longtime Kelleys Island bird banding volunteer Tom Bartlett, who has been inducted into the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Hall of Fame! 🎉

This is a tremendous and well-deserved honor recognizing Tom’s decades of dedication to Ohio’s birds, wildlife, and natural areas. For more than 25 years, Tom has banded birds at the Museum’s Scheele Preserve on Kelleys Island, surpassing an incredible 20,000 birds banded along the way.

Tom’s contributions extend far beyond bird banding. A gifted biologist and field naturalist, his research and conservation work have helped inform the protection of significant natural areas by the Museum and our conservation partners. His commitment to sharing his knowledge and giving countless hours to conservation has made a lasting difference.

Tom joins an extraordinary group of past Ohio Natural Resources Hall of Fame inductees, including Harvey Webster, Jim Bissell, E. Lucy Braun, Jared Potter Kirtland, and John Chapman (“Johnny Appleseed”).

Congratulations, Tom, we are incredibly proud to have you as part of the Museum family!

Every child should learn that protecting our waterways starts with the choices we make on land. Teaching children about watersheds helps them understand how rain, streams, rivers, and lakes are all connected—and how pollution in one area can affect an entire ecosystem.

Simple lessons like picking up litter, reducing waste, and keeping harmful materials out of storm drains can make a lasting difference. When we teach kids to care for their local watershed, we’re helping them become thoughtful stewards of their environment. The habits they build today can help keep our water clean and healthy for generations to come. Let’s empower the next generation to protect the water that connects us all!
