KIDS DON’T NEED TO BE SHIELDED FROM DIFFICULT TOPICS. THEY NEED SUPPORT IN UNDERSTANDING THEM

From school to social media, kids are constantly absorbing big ideas. Rather than avoid the conversation, ask questions that invite honesty and reflection:

“What do you know about this?”
“How do you feel when you hear people talk about it?”
“Would you like to learn more together?”

If you're not sure where to begin, here's a simple, step-by-step approach:

Identify the topic that might impact your child.

Research it. Learn the language kids might hear and what it means.

Pay attention. Has your child mentioned anything, or seemed unusually quiet or curious?

Ask without judgment: “What do you know about this?” and “How do you feel when you hear people talk about it?”

Offer to talk more or find someone they trust who can help them process it.

Let them know they can come back to you anytime—no consequences, no lectures, just support.

It’s also helpful to give kids something they can explore on their own.
📘 The Junkroom Band’s Gig Goes Global introduces children’s human rights in a relatable, illustrated format.
📗 The Survival Skills series gives clear, visual guidance on real-world challenges—from staying safe to getting good grades to avoiding the wrong crowd.

These tools were created to help kids understand the “why” behind expectations and give them the confidence to act on what they believe.

Every child deserves to be taken seriously. Let’s give them the tools—and the trust—to navigate tough topics with honesty and care.

KIDS AND SHARING

Long summer days mean more time with friends, and more opportunities to practice sharing. That’s not always easy.

Some kids don’t want to share because they’re still figuring out what’s fair. Others struggle when they see someone else with something they want. And some just haven’t learned how to handle the frustration that comes with taking turns.

SHARING ISN’T ABOUT GIVING EVERYTHING AWAY

It’s about learning when and how to include others. It’s about recognizing that everyone wants to feel seen and respected. And it’s about finding small ways to create connection.

Sharing matters because relationships matter. Kids who learn that early are more likely to build lasting friendships, navigate group settings, and feel confident in social spaces.

My Help Me Be Good book on Being Selfish breaks down what it means to be thoughtful and fair — in terms kids actually understand.

TWEENS, SCREENS, AND SMART CHOICES

Summer gives kids more free time and more time online. That can be a gift or a problem, depending on how it's handled.

If you're tired of fighting about phones, try starting with questions instead of rules.
“How is social media making you feel lately?”
“What would a healthy screen day look like for you?”
“Do you ever log off feeling better — or worse?”

The goal isn't to control the screen. It's to help your child learn to control their choices. That’s why the most effective parents act like coaches, not referees. They listen, ask thoughtful questions, and keep the conversation open.

Kids don’t need lectures. They need help thinking clearly about what’s in front of them.
