This past Sunday (August 29, 2021) Rainford Hugh Perry - sometimes referred to as ‘Upsetter’ - lovingly known as 𝐋𝐄𝐄 “𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡” 𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐑𝐘 - passed away at the age of 85. ⁣
⁣
During the early days of ska/rocksteady, Lee wrote, sang and recorded a number of songs for Jamaican music legend 𝐂𝐨𝐱𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐝𝐝 (Studio One). Soon after he would start his own record label and find commercial success. 𝐁𝐨𝐛 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐲 began to work with him and began to embrace and embody a more spirited/soulful approach which he would later become known for, inspired/influenced by his time spent with Lee. ⁣

Along with 𝐁𝐨𝐛 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝗪𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐬,  he would find success producing works by 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐲𝐥𝐞𝐬, 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐧, 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 and 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐩𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 (his studio house band). At the end of he 1970s he branched out to work 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡 and during the mid-90s the 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐲𝐬. A super sonic dub original his mixes were ahead of the curve, one that he unknowingly created. ⁣

Since 2000 he’s released over 20x solo albums, This year alone, at age 85, he worked on/with material by artists 𝐑𝐨𝐥 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐧 (𝘍𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴) and 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐀𝐠𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐨𝐦 (𝘓𝘦𝘦 “𝘚𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩” 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘺’𝘴 𝘎𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘦). ⁣

Fifty-nine years ago… ⁣

McKie Fitzhugh’s Lounge in the South Side of Chicago was a hub for both jazz and blues. Over the years greats such as:  Dizzy Gilespie, Gene Ammons, Sonny Stitt, Max Roach, Ahmad Jamal, Illinois Jacquett, Art Blakely, Al Hibbler and many others performed for small crowds at this tiny venue.  ⁣

This cardboard poster, printed by Globe Printing, showcases Roland Kirk and his Jazz Group played the first twelve nights in August, 1962. John Coltrane came in right after him doing shows between August 15 - August 26th, which just so happens to be tonight. ⁣
⁣
Use your imagination and go back. Bars were filled with smoke, notes, men and women talking about their day and then out comes John Coltrane. History happening in the ordinary moment of every day life. ⁣

On August 7, 2021 Dennis “Dee Tee” Thomas, saxophonist and founding member of Kool & The Gang, passed away at the age of 70 years old. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
In addition to his deft alto-saxophone skills Thomas also played the flute, percussions and served as band emcee during performances. His most recent performance was this past July 4th. ⁣⁣
Can anybody fill his space? I don’t know, I don’t know…. ⁣⁣
