We couldn’t have said it better ourselves! We know going fast looks fun but building a solid foundation is our goal first and foremost. The more time you spend in the saddle the more quickly those foundational blocks are built 🐎

If they can’t walk and steer, they can’t trot and steer.
If they can’t balance at the trot, they aren’t ready to canter.
If they can’t go catch their own horse, groom it, tack it up and take responsibility for it, how are they supposed to lead that horse from the saddle?

Going faster does not equal getting better. Strapping your kid to a horse and sending them into the arena isn’t making them better, it’s setting them up to get hurt.

You might think watching your kid walk circles isn’t exciting. You might think they should be cantering, jumping “doing more.”

But sometimes they’re simply not ready.

And respectfully — that’s why you hired an instructor. Because knowing how and when to progress a rider is our job.

We aren’t holding your kid back. We’re building the foundation that keeps them safe and makes them GOOD.

🌙 When it's hot, why do warm nights matter so much?

Horses rely on cooler overnight temperatures to dissipate the heat they've accumulated throughout the day. When nighttime temperatures remain above 70 degrees F, especially with high humidity, they receive little relief.

Less overnight cooling means horses may start the next day carrying residual heat, making additional work, travel, or sun/heat exposure more challenging.

How can you support your horse on warm nights?
💧 Provide free access to fresh, clean water.
🚿 Hose off horses with a continuous flow of cool water to help dissipate heat and lower their body temperature.
💨 Increase airflow around horses with livestock-safe fans.
🐴 Avoid working horses when they have not had enough time to rest and recover from the heat.
🌡️ Monitor horses for signs of heat stress.

When the nights stay hot, recovery matters just as much as avoiding the daytime heat.

We’re watching the heat this week. Lessons may be changed due to the hot temperatures.

☀️🐴 Hot & Humid Weather: Know the Limits for Your Horse

Horses can acclimate to hot, humid conditions, but there’s a limit to what they can safely handle.

💡 Adding the air temperature (degrees F) and relative humidity (%) together can provide a useful indicator of your horse's ability to cool down. If this value is

✅ Less than 130 – Horses cool effectively.
⚠️ 130 to 150 – Cooling ability is reduced. Use caution.
🚫 Over 150 – Cooling is greatly reduced.
❗ Over 180 – Conditions may be fatal if your horse is stressed.

📍Example: 92°F + 69% humidity = 161 — this is a high-risk zone.

These numbers are a helpful guide when considering if it's safe to exercise your horse. However, always consider your horse’s unique condition and needs too.

It’s been a long winter and I know with this nice weather we are all itching to get back into the barn and riding. I know I sure am!

For those who are new to KH Equestrian I am currently pregnant due the 3rd week of May. This means I don’t plan to start lessons up again until late June as I adjust to life with a newborn during our busy time of year as hay producers.

For returning students I have been partnering with a close trusted friend to help get some lessons taught in the interim but their schedule can only accommodate so many students.

New this year for both new and returning students I will be doing a Google Calendar sign up system. My hours will also be a bit different with needing to have a little one home before too late. They will change in the fall when I go back to work full time so be planning ahead.

Lesson structure will stay the same; 1 hour lessons including catching, grooming, riding and turning out.
