I hope you all had a solid holiday weekend.⁣

What did fun look like for you? What does fun look like for you today? This month?⁣

Giving myself permission to experience joy. I must write it down on a damn post-it note, or else I won’t do it.⁣

I don’t say this with the intention of ignoring everything going on in the world. It’s heavy. It’s complex. It’s arduous. It’s about self-care, for afterall, we can’t best serves others if we aren’t taking care of our own needs and health. ⁣

However, without a doubt, preparing, creating and serving a meal (yes it’s work) always brings me joy. Cooking is a language and action of kindness. ⁣

And to quote the Dali Lama: “kindness is my religion.”⁣

I also watched the movie Armageddon with my dog in the basement. A pure masterpiece of pop filmmaking. And I did so, eating some of those ribs you see in the picture.⁣

Please comment below what fun looks like for you…⁣

Fourth of July might look/feel/seem different this year. Obviously.⁣

But that doesn’t mean your picnic or meal-time table does…⁣

Every summer I love whipping up my famous my Perfectly Paleo Sweet Potato Salad to share for my own private dinner table, a now (socially distant picnic), and special holiday occasions, celebrations and gatherings…⁣

-Roasted Sweets⁣
-Hard Boiled Eggs⁣
-Bacon (optional)⁣
-Caramelized Onions⁣
-Pepitas⁣
-A Big Wallop of my 5 Ingredient Homemade Mayo.⁣

I don’t know anyone, I mean ANYONE, who has disliked this dish. ⁣

Behind every recipe there is an intention. The intention here, I disliked regular potato salad growing up, so I decided to make my own with my favorite superfood, the mighty sweet potato.⁣

First time I made it and tried it for myself, it was love at first taste.⁣

If this looks good, comment below!!!

WE. So what does this mean to me?⁣

We are stronger together. ⁣

We are better together.⁣

We are meant to love, support and be of service to one another.⁣

It starts with me, but it is far from about me. It’s about the WE COLLECTIVE.

A few weeks ago I had the honor and privilege to be interviewed by an amazing brother named Kimmar, aka ⁣

We digitally met through this platform here.⁣

Then without even knowing it, met again through Masculine Alchemy Training - where he joined my weekly “BrotherFit” class.⁣

What has since followed in this chance meeting is deep, engaging conversations about life, healthy, legacy and so much more. ⁣

Kimmar is doing some amazing things out there in the world, and I encourage each and everyone of you to show him so love by listening in on his incredible podcast, ⁣

Better yet, set up a call to talk with this amazing brother about he can help you become a better human being.⁣

Blessed and honored Kimmar! ⁣

I’m grateful for you brother and much love!

This Sunday is Father’s Day!⁣

Whether you are a Dad or Father Figure looking to fire up your grill and cook with your family, or STRAIGHT UP cooking for your Father Figure in your life, this recipe is going to speak courage, strength and connection.⁣

For me, cooking is a language of love. It’s that meal-time connection, that presence and quality time with those you love most in this world. ⁣

Behind every recipe in The Common Man’s Kitchen is an INTENTION.⁣

How you do one thing is how you do everything. ⁣

Cook with the intention of love and connection, and that is what you will create in your mealtime ritual.⁣

DM or Comment Below if you want the recipe!⁣

Happy Thankful Thursday Everyone!⁣

Changing up the delivery of my “Thankful Thursday” message this week because this photo is just too good not to share.⁣

I’m checking in with gratitude this morning. Gratitude for love, for family, for connection, for milestones.⁣

Last Saturday, my Mom & Dad (Randy & Sue) celebrated 50 YEARS of marriage! FIVE-OHHH!⁣

We gathered in my hometown of Brookings, SD to surprise my mom and dad for their epic milestone. We all played on a lake, ate wonderful food, all while laughing and loving the very moments we were in. If just for that present moment, for after all, that’s all we have anyways.⁣

My dad has taught me the value of hard work and being proud of what you create.⁣

My mom has shown me the power of loving unconditionally and taught me how to have a deep, caring heart.⁣

We are a perfectly imperfect family (like every family that ever has been and is) - but we all show up fully for one another, be it the best of times, or the most challenging of times. And that’s what matters most.⁣

I love my family and so grateful to be a “Kah-Newt-Zen!” @ Brookings, South Dakota

Even If / Even When I FAIL…I AM NOT BROKEN⁣

Going to the very growing edge of where fear meets the open waters of growth and possibility. ⁣

I ask myself, what exactly is “failure?” And next, what exactly is “success?”⁣

Recall the kind of feeling you have when you succeed, when you have made it to the top, when you win a game an argument , hit a PR, or hit the winning lottery ticket.⁣

Contrast that to a feeling you get when you really enjoy the journey itself, you do it for the journey itself, when you enjoy and flow in the job you are doing. Where you are absorbed completely in the action you are engaged in. ⁣

Do you, do I, truly understand the true nature of worldly feeling and pursuits, the feelings of self-promotion and self-glorification - these pursuits meant to provide thrills, excitement - and then emptiness?⁣

Where in your journey, in my journey, do we stop and realize that these pursuits do not produce the nourishment and happiness that is produced in contemplative time in Nature or in the company of one’s friends or work. ⁣

I’m not saying I’m perfect or I know everything, I’m just present to the questions and the message in all the messiness. ⁣

Bottom line, ask yourself what is really going to make you happy?⁣

For me, it’s having a sense of humor and smiling in the face of failure…⁣

THE COURAGE TO CHANGE THE THINGS I CAN⁣
AND THE WISDOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE⁣

(Please share your experience, strength and hope of YOU, acting with courage to change the things you can - today, in this moment)⁣

Last week was the first time I handled a barbell in about 60 days.⁣

I recognize I am stereotyping myself with my relationship to a barbell, because so much of life, my life, is beyond a barbell. ⁣

But here was what what I was present to, in that moment, was the power this object represented in my life. It was control. It was direct. It was purpose.⁣

I felt like a KING, grasping his sword to remember his strength, confidence and sovereignty. King Theoden!⁣

I was King Arthur pulling Excalibur from the stone.⁣

I work with steel in the kitchen. I work with steel in my movement practice. And right now, in this disruptive age, I keep asking myself “what courage do I have to change the things I can.” ⁣

It’s iron sharpening iron: what I control against the wisdom to let go of those things I can’t. ⁣

Mentally Tight. Physically Loose.⁣

Happy Fun Friday!
