🦞 Getting close to ending our Crawfish Week at Twigs & Pines!! 🦞

We learned SO much about these little creek creatures this week!

The kids learned that crawfish can move super quickly backwards, have 10 legs, and are called decapods—so naturally, everyone got to create their very own 10-legged decapod creature out of Play-Doh! 😂

We learned that crawfish homes are called burrows, and the kids were challenged to build their own burrow to keep a toy crawfish safe. Then came the real test… we sent a “river” through to see if their burrows could handle the rushing water and keep their crawfish protected! 🌊🦞

We also talked about camouflage and how some types of crawfish blend in really well with their surroundings. The kids colored their own crawfish and tried to make them blend right into our creek environment. 🌿🪨

And of course… you can’t have Crawfish Week without heading down to the creek and catching some REAL crawfish of our own! 🙌

Today the kids went home with all their crawfish gear and plenty of stories from a week full of building, experimenting, creating, exploring, and getting our hands dirty!

Next week… we move on to another creature that calls our creek home! 👀

🦞 Day 1 of Crawfish Week!! 🦞

We officially kicked off our month of creek creatures today, starting with one of our creek favorites — CRAWFISH!

Of course, we had to celebrate with our crawfish claw headbands! 😂🦞 We learned that crawfish can swim BACKWARDS super fast to escape danger… so naturally, we had to practice moving like crawfish ourselves — all the way to the creek!

We also put our own “claws” to the test! The kids used pinchers to try picking up different types of “food” to see just how easy — or tricky — it can be for a crawfish to grab its dinner.

And you can't have Crawfish Week at Twigs & Pines without the real thing… we found our own crawfish in the creek! 🙌

Lots of laughing, exploring, experimenting and hands-on learning today — and this was only Day 1! 🦞🌲💦

Twigs & Pines is all about letting kids be KIDS — exploring the woods, splashing in the creek, catching critters, getting muddy, creating, learning through hands-on experiences, and building some pretty awesome friendships along the way.

A little glimpse into a week at Twigs & Pines! 🌿🐞🐜🐌🦋

This week has been FULL of bug surprises—and the amount of little critters the kids have found has been pretty wild! 😂 We’ve learned all about roly-polies, ladybugs, snails, and ants, and we’ll finish out the week with butterflies! 🦋

The kids have loved exploring and searching for them, learning some pretty cool (and sometimes crazy!) facts, and making crafts along the way!

And we have definitely taken FULL advantage of this break from the heatwave! 🙌 Lots of creek adventures, exploring the woods, getting dirty, and just enjoying being outside together.

The kids—and the teachers!—are absolutely loving the start of this new school year. 🌲💚 It’s been such a fun start, and we’re just getting going!

First day of “Bug… or Not Actually a Bug?!” Week 🐛🪲🌿

Today was all about roly-polies—and we learned that they’re actually NOT bugs at all! 🤯 They’re crustaceans, which means they’re more closely related to crabs and shrimp! 🦀 We also learned that they breathe with gills, love cool, damp places, and some can roll into a tiny ball to protect themselves.

After learning about our little roly-poly friends, we headed out on a backyard critter search and found LOTS of little friends hiding around the property. 🔎🪱🐞

And of course, we made it down to the creek for some exploring and playing! 💦🌲

It’s only Monday… “Bug (or Not Actually a Bug)” Week is just getting started! 😂🐛

Lots and LOTS of creek fun today!! 🌿💦

We caught tadpoles, crawfish, minnows and probably could’ve stayed down there ALL day! 😂

We also used slices from a tree right here on our own school property to make necklaces! The kids got to paint them and take home their own little piece of Twigs & Pines. 🥹🌲🤎

Creek exploring, creating, getting messy and making memories… pretty dang good day in the woods!! 🐸🦞🌿

What a fun day TWO!! 🌲🤎

We welcomed a whole bunch of new kiddos to the Twigs & Pines crew today, and everyone blended together SO well!! 🥹

This week is really all about getting to know each other, learning the property and getting comfortable with our new routines—so today included lots of free play, games, exploring, and of course… making some VERY silly clay faces on our tree friends. 😂🌳 The kids had an absolute blast with that one!

Such a great start with our big crew today. Ready to do it all again tomorrow!! 🌲☀️

🌲 Back to School — Day 1! 🌲

With our smaller Monday crew, we got to ease back into the school year today! 😂

The kids got to reconnect with old friends, learn some new names, talk about what it means to be a kind forest friend, play in the woods, and of course spend some time at the creek! 💚

We also made our nature frames using all the little things that caught the kids’ attention on our walk out to the woods. 🍃🌼

Tomorrow the BIG crew comes! We’re so excited to welcome lots of new kiddos to Twigs & Pines and say hi to some friends we haven’t seen since the end of last school year!

Day 1 in the books! 🌲🤎
