Baird Elementary School counselor Jen Kelm is now the first non-teacher to receive a Golden Apple Award!

"Mrs. Kelm is like, basically, everybody knows her and everybody loves to talk to her," said Cal, a fifth grader.

Red Smith School social studies teacher Alex Downing is being honored with a Golden Apple Award in just his third year as a teacher. His students aren't surprised at all! 🍏

“I knew that even before he got called, I knew he would win,” seventh grader Maggie Larsen said.

Students weren't surprised when Downing was awarded a Golden Apple, despite only being in his third year in the profession.

Students say they look forward to being in 2026 Golden Apple Award winner Wes Berndt's classes at Green Bay Preble High School. For Mr. Berndt, teaching is all about setting students up for success after high school.

"I love seeing the 'ah-ha!' moments of, 'Oh, this is something I can possibly do as a career,'" Berndt said. 🍏

Golden Apple recipient Westin "Wes" Berndt is known for his high-heat lessons and heart of gold.

For Golden Apple Award winner and Green Bay Southwest High School teacher Andrew Crane, teaching wasn't his first career path, but something he later felt called to do. 🍏

"I realized then that maybe working in a cubicle, even though it was a great company, wasn't my thing. And so, with my wife's encouragement, I went back to school to become a teacher, and it's a decision I never regretted," Crane said.

He said his enthusiasm for the job comes from his love of the subjects -- sociology, economics, geography and government.

The Green Bay Area Public Schools Food Service production center welcomed students from UW-Green Bay's Nutrition & Dietetics Program in March.

Students from the Quantity Foods course heard from Food Service staff about child nutrition programs and what it's like working in K-12 food service. Students also toured the building and tried their hand working on the packing line. One of the UWGB students is a Preble High School alumnus!

We love helping future food service staff learn more about their chosen path. We hope they join our team some day!
