LONELINESS: DID GOD MAKE US FOR COMMUNITY?

Have you ever stopped to think about how much your life depends on other people? In a world that celebrates independence, it’s easy to forget how connected we really are, especially when it seems there’s a loneliness epidemic going on.
Most of the food we eat has been handled and prepared by farmers and food service workers. The homes we live in were built by skilled architects and craftsmen. The roads we travel, the clothes we wear, and even the jobs we have exist because of the efforts of countless people before us.
Unless you live completely off the grid, nearly every part of life is shaped by the work of people living in community with each other. We are far more dependent on one another than we realize. Then why do we feel so lonely?
The Loneliness Hiding Behind Our Screens
While our dependence on one another hasn’t changed, our perception of it has. In the age of modern technology, we have never relied on so many people to make daily life possible and at the same time have never been more convinced that we can make it on our own. Even though we live in a time when people long for connection more than ever and also have more ways than ever to communicate instantly, most people have never felt more alone. Social media often replaces meaningful conversations with quick responses, and opportunities to solve problems together or grow in our skills are too easily dismissed with a simple, “Just ask Google.”
The more we rely on screens, the less we rely on one another. When we choose to connect more with machines than with people, we miss the opportunity to grow in character by learning from others and to deepen our relationships through our common struggles. Though it is highly convenient, this attitude continues to convince us we don’t really need other people.
What Happens When We Try to Face Life Alone
So what happens when you are faced with problems you can’t handle yourself?Where is your support when your grief is too much to bear and worry keeps you up at night? Where do you turn when tragedy strikes and you are left on your own? In those moments, you and I are reminded that we were never meant to walk through life by ourselves.
God never intended us to live that way. From the very beginning, he designed his people to live in community, serving one another with the gifts he has given. Yet even the strongest community cannot meet our greatest need. We needed more than encouragement, wisdom, or the work of another’s hands. We needed a Savior.
Christ Saved Us AND Gave Us Community
What we could never do for ourselves, Christ has already done. Through his perfect life, death, and resurrection, Jesus accomplished the salvation we so desperately needed. Every blessing we receive from God rests on his finished work, reminding us that the greatest gift we have ever received came through the hands of our powerful Savior.
But Christ’s work did more than save us from sin. He brought us into a community where everyone is upheld by their new status as forgiven children of God. Those whom he has saved are not meant to walk through life alone but to live as one body, joined together in Christ.
Christian Community Combats Loneliness
God’s people are not a collection of believers isolated from one another but a united, supportive family that’s held together by Christ. “For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us” (Romans 12:4–6). God made us to encourage one another, support one another through struggles, and grow together as we gather around his Word.
We don’t discover salvation by searching for answers or relying on our own wisdom. We know the Father because he has made himself known through his Son. In Christ, God reached out to us, restoring the relationship that sin had broken and bringing us into a community that is united by his grace.
If loneliness looms in your life, remember this: You were never meant to carry it alone. You can lean into that Christian community and face this life together in Jesus.
