On October 28th, the Brecksville-Broadview Heights City Schools hosted their 2nd Annual State of the Schools presentation at BBH High School.

Superintendent Jeff Harrison and Treasurer Craig Yaniglos shared updates on district finances, the Strategic Plan, and progress across key academic and operational priorities.

🏫 Academic Highlights

• The district earned an overall 5-star rating on the State of Ohio Report Card - exceeding statewide standards.

• BBH High School received 5 stars in every component for the third consecutive year.

• BBH Middle School earned 5 stars overall, with 4 stars in progress.

• The district’s next focus area: continued improvement in English Language Arts (ELA) while maintaining strength in Math and other core subjects.

🏅 Community Recognition

Congratulations to the Skuza Family and C.A.P.A. leader Kelly Lazar, recipients of this year’s Community Champion Awards for their outstanding dedication and service to BBHCSD students and families.

💬 Transparency & Communication

BBHCSD also introduced exciting new efforts to increase financial transparency and community engagement - including:

• The launch of the BBH Community Finance Alliance, a new advisory group dedicated to reviewing district finances, gathering stakeholder feedback, and strengthening trust and understanding across the community.

• I’m honored to share that I’ve been appointed to this alliance and look forward to contributing to this important work.

• The district’s new podcast series featuring Superintendent Harrison and Treasurer Yaniglos, designed to keep families informed about finances, facilities, and district initiatives in an easy, accessible format.

📅 What’s Next

The next Key Communicators Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 28, 2026 at 7:00 PM at the Elementary School - open to all community members who want to stay informed and connected.

Long before Brecksville and Broadview Heights were joined into one district, our community’s roots in education began humbly, with a one-room schoolhouse.

In 1815, the very first formal school in our community stood at the corner of Broadview & Avery Roads, just north of today’s Royalton Road. Children of all ages gathered there in a single classroom. Their teacher, Miss Orianna Paine - daughter of early settler Seth Paine - earned just $1 a week and was boarded by families in the community who provided her meals and a place to stay in exchange for teaching.

Even before that building was raised, classes were held informally in Seth Paine’s own log cabin at Broadview & Boston Roads, where Orianna first taught the children of neighboring families. At that time, what we now know as Broadview Heights was still part of Brecksville Township, so the young learners came from across the whole township - there wasn’t yet a separate “Brecksville” or “Broadview Heights.”

From that modest beginning in a cabin and a one-room schoolhouse to the thriving district we know today, the tradition of community-driven education has always been at the heart of Brecksville and Broadview Heights.

On August 19, 2025, U.S. News & World Report released its Best High Schools Rankings - and Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School once again stood out.

• #4 in Cleveland
• #20 in Ohio
• #584 in the Nation

With an average ACT score of 29, BBH students continue to excel well above state and national averages - a true testament to the dedication of our students, teachers, families, and community.
