Parents tell me, “I don’t know if my 3/4 year old has enough focus to be in violin lessons.” I answer with, “I understand why’d that would be a concern for you. The good news is, I don’t expect them to be anything other than who they are! 4 year olds are not made to stand still for 30 minutes. That’s why our lessons are expertly curated to have certain points to focus, and other moments where we wiggle, dance, and sing, all while accomplishing so many musical things through play and imagination.”

This video shows one of those “focus” moments. But is she distracted? Is she refusing to complete the task? No! She’s so into learning “play position,” because she’s been given the tools to succeed, in a joyful, warm, and playful environment.

One of the best violin teaching tools I own costs just a few dollars.

An egg shaker.

It may seem simple, but it helps young violinists develop steady beat, rhythm, listening skills, coordination, beautiful posture, and expressive movement long before those skills are executed on the violin.

Children aren’t miniature adults. They learn best through play.

Research shows that children learn up to 20 times faster when they’re actively engaged in playful learning, which is why I fill my Wee Violin lessons with games, singing, movement, stories, and fun activities that build real musical skills. Learning should feel joyful, not stressful.

The best part is that children don’t even realize how much they’re learning. They just know they’re having fun.

I use egg shakers in almost every Wee Violin class, and they still make appearances with some of my older students. Turns out, no one is ever too old to enjoy shaking an egg shaker.
